Old Hill C.C. v Lichfield Nomads C.C.

Old Gits Lose at Old Hill

Nomads only just made up 11 players and went to Old Hill with a scratch side on a hot day. Kareem had not seen the email saying he was playing and had to be alerted by phone turning up 30 minutes after the start. Nomads were batting , opening with Bastable and Gardner who struggled to make runs and was out for just 2. However Bastable was putting on a good show against some tight bowling, and having survived a strident appeal for caught behind went on to make 29 before succumbing to a faster ball from the spinner. Cogzell came in to join Rolfe but had to return to collect his bat and used it to score only 2. Inam Kareem looked as though he might give Nomads a decent total scoring quickly with 5 fours and a six, but was the given out lbw for 27. Fearon was bowled by a slower ball on 12. Rolfe was nearing his 50 but was run out on 46. Mountford avoided a gonad before being caught. Cartwright went in to bat, but he also had to return when he realised that Ellis had already walked onto the field for his innings. Ellis was run out and Cartwright and Pickering saw the innings to a close. There were 3 run outs in the innings probably due to the opposition being about a third the age of the Nomads.

Any hope of a match was quickly destroyed by the opposition opener, Keeling-Wright, who scored 54 in 22 balls before retiring. It was later found he plays at county 2nd team level !
Fearon and Cogzell were put out of their misery by being taken off although at that stage Keeling-Wright had retired and Hoddy and Mountford both claimed a wicket. The best figures were from Cartwight who had a very creditable 13 off 3 overs. The other opener also retired, on 51, and Old Hill quickly reached the required total of just 15.3 overs.
A somewhat pointless afternoon when a player of much higher class destroyed the match as a contest. The only consolation was that we did not have to spend too much time in the sun.
