Wistaston win by 4 wickets
A church service and football game at Wistaston Sports ground resulted in a very full car park and a late start to the match, which was reduced to 35 overs. On the plus side the pitch was rolled and looked to be in good condition and Wistaston kindly supplied a stand in player, Alan Owen, who bowled well and was useful in the field.
Gibson made a good start against the pacy opening attack of Jarvis and Godwin who were getting movement off the seam. He punished the occasional bad ball, finding the boundary with fours and two powerfully hit sixes. Along with cuts and dabs from Gardner, the openers put on a partnership of 64 until Gibson was bowled attempting an on drive for a well made 44. Loxley showed early promise with a well struck cut to point for four, but a similar shot off the next ball was well caught by Sampath.
Sampath managed to get a lot of turn with his off spin. Gardner started to find a few boundaries until he was bowled by a deceptive slow ball from Townsend for 42. Bastable was Townsend’s second victim shortly afterwards. It was left to Moss ( 27 n.o.) and Rolfe (10 n.o.) to take the score to 142 with a valuable partnership of 41. In the spirit of Sunday cricket Wistaston shared the bowling around between 9 players.
Wistaston started off at a similar rate to the Nomads. Opener Mainwaring’s sweep shot was looking dangerous until he had to retire at 15. Manning scored at a run a ball until he was out to a well taken low catch by Bastable off the bowling of Gibson. Moss’s spin bowling accounted for Mutch and Loxley’s effective yorker length bowling claimed Townsend.
But this brought Sampath and Perks together and they started to accumulate runs, placing their shots and taking quick singles. When Perks was eventually out lbw to Gibson they had made a partnership of 73. Sampath eventually retired on 52 not out (off 53 balls). Both teams scores were similar after 30 overs, but a flurry of attacking shots from Godwin finally won the game for Wistaston. It was a sporting contest, the teams were well matched and the game went virtually down to the wire.
