Nomads lose first Tour match

The first match of the tour against Royal Brussels highlighted certain differences between the two teams. The most notable differences were in terms of age and ability. Batting first, the Nomads found scoring very difficult against an attack that combined pace, lateral movement and bounce. Even the normally free scoring Gardner was restricted although he contributed 23 to an opening partnership of 28 that took 12 overs. The 50 only came up in the 23rd over as Westwood and Stanley struggled to pierce the field. Having exerted a virtual stranglehold, Royal Brussels introduced variation into the attack using a total of 9 bowlers. Pinfield top scored with a typically busy 30. Blackburn (P) was the only other batsman to reach double figures. The final total of 122 was seen to be just about defendable. However the traditional problem of dropped catches (including one in the first over) hindered any chance of a fight back. Runs were conceded steadily against a batting line up that seemed of equal quality to their bowling. Maclear, who made a half century, was given three lives. The Nomads fought on (and as the game was played only a few miles from the battlefield of Waterloo this was only fitting) but the total was passed in the 20th over for the loss of only two wickets. Wellington famously referred to Waterloo as “the nearest run thing you ever saw”. He would not have said the same about the 2009 battle.

After the game a barbecue was enjoyed (to line the stomach) before further research was undertaken into the qualities of establishments purveying alcoholic beverages.

On a hot and sunny Saturday the Lichfield Nomads came to visit RBCC on their Belgian Cricket tour. Some were still suffering the after-effects of the previous evening’s merriment but they all put on brave faces and were saved too much early exertion as their captain won the toss and batted.

Kumar and Eddie opened up with the new ball and both found some nice shape but through a series of low edges and leg side clips the Lichfield Nomads made some good early progress getting to 15 off 3 overs.

From then on though the RBCC attack clamped down, bowling in good areas and not giving their openers enough room to get away. Eddie continued without much luck occasionally telegraphing his slower ball which was dispatched to the side screen behind his head. It wasn’t until approaching the drinks break that the first breakthrough was had by Eddie when the skipper standing at mid-off got everyone’s heart racing as he attempted to make an easy catch look difficult… but held it in the end as though suggesting he would be happy to relinquish the Stevie Wonder award this season.

At the drinks break they were 44 after 20 and heading to a meagre total. Prashant took the ball following the interval and got a wicket with a ball which curved more than one of Angelina Jolie’s Bullets, however despite remaining ludicrously economical he, Gregg and then Allan couldn’t find the penetration to take any more wickets.

Guy being the generous captain he is, let some of the more occasional bowlers have a crack and almost instantly the skipper’s plan was revealed as Danish got the faintest of edges, so faint that the was no sound, so faint that the was no deviation but because the opposing batsman so close to fainting he did the honourable thing and walked.

Simon was then given a crack and proved instantly that his star is on the rise and he ripped through the Lichfield lower order putting the frontline bowlers to shame. Two of his three came as the batsmen tried to force the ball away but found Simon’s lines too tight and skied the ball to James in the covers.

James couldn’t repeat the feats when he dropped a similar chance off his own wayward bowling: by the end of the innings Lichfield had gotten to 122 which considering the semi-hung-over state of some of their team, was a pretty decent effort.

The chase got under-way like a rocket with Anurag and Richard plundering the bowling, they raced to 59 off of 13 before Anurag was sent on his way. James came and went for a circumspect duck as the golf course end continued its unpredictable bounce (or lack of).

This made way for Prashant to come to the crease who joined Richard in slapping away what was some fairly gentle bowling, not that Richard would let you think it. With three fairly take-able catches going down off of him before he got to his 50 which included some really terrific shots, punishing anything that they bowled short with powerful hooks and pulls.

The chase was completed in about 19 overs with Prash on 30 and Rich on 56 and the teams took a well earned break as the Lichfield boys planned their night time excursions into Brussels.
