Backs to the Wall

In the first double-header of the season, an early start was promised at Wall, but did not materialise. Stand-in Captain Pinfield made a good start, winning the toss and electing to field. But after that things went downhill. A reasonable start saw bat and ball evenly matched with Heslington and Hoddy bowling to Vish and Buxton. However, the start of the fifth over saw Heslington pull up in pain with an injured foot, and he played no further part in proceedings. As luck would have it, Nomads, who often field 7or 8 regular bowlers had a bare 5, now reduced to four. Blackburn took over from Heslington, and shortly after Edwards from Hoddy. Although bowling well, the opening batsmen progressed steadily with Vish in particular scoring freely. Eventually, Edwards bowled Buxton with a fine ball, pitching middle and taking off stump with the score on 94. Things began to look up. Fearon took a wicket with his infamous slower ball, and had an lbw appeal upheld from a ball which kept very low. Three overs from stand-in bowler Pickering were required. Fearon was due to bowl his last over, but according to the scorer had already had 8. However, the opposition allowed Fearon to bowl another over. He of course got a wicket with the first ball. When Hoddy came back he fortunately bowled the opener, Vish, with a ball going down leg side, which the batsmen deflected down onto his wicket. Vish had already scored 108 so this was a very important wicket to get. The Wall innings ground to a halt and they were finally bowled out for 187. This was an excellent recovery for Nomads and we saw a chance of winning the match.

Nomads' innings started in the worst possible way when the first over saw Gardner call for a very tight single to point. Fearon was a bit slow in sending him back and Gardener was run out by 2 yards. Weir soon found himself back in the pavilion for a duck. Fearon and Pinfield put on a good stand. This was aided by Fearon standing his ground to a confident appeal for caught behind which the umpire gave. Apparently there was sufficient doubt that the opposition captain withdrew the appeal. 'W. G' Fearon then pulled a calf muscle, but bravely batted on with a runner to score 40. When Pinfield was out, we missed the opportunity of sending in Heslington with a runner and thus causing complete chaos by having two runners on the pitch at the same time. A stand of 77 between Pinfield and Fearon at a good run rate saw Nomads in with a chance of still winning the match. But a procession of quick wickets, with only Stanley making a reasonable contribution of 23 not out saw the innings peter out. Wall were very sporting opposition being very generous with some wide bowling from Nomads, and also allowing a player to remain at the crease when given out, and possibly to bowl an extra over.
(Ed - My theory is that Edwards bowled 9. He started before Fearon and finished after him but trying to decipher which one of Fearon's overs should have been credited to Edwards proved nigh on impossible.)
