Church Eaton v Lichfield Nomads
Nomads yet to get off the mark
With a couple of late withdrawals Nomads arrived with only 10
players, including the late addition of Phil Craddock (possibly another of E.
Nesbitt’s famous group?) who played a good fielding part and added a few useful
runs at the end. The pitch, as last year, proved to have somewhat unpredictable
bounce, anywhere between nose and ankle as the Nomads openers strived to make
serious progress against the Church Eaton opening bowlers, the score mounting to
66 without loss by drinks and a further 16 had been added by the 22nd
over when Gardner nicked one behind for the same score as he got in this fixture
last year. As we know ‘one brings two’ and so it proved as Pinfield followed
almost immediately for a gritty 16. Fortunately Church Eaton bowlers were
helping the score along with a liberal selection of wides as Nomads continued to
struggle in the last 10 overs, Caygill played a couple of sweet shots but was
undone by Greaves, Pickering dangled his bat to one that would have added to the
wide tally if he’d just stayed still and Hughes lifted his head once too often
as he was superbly caught by the fielder running back. In all a difficult
innings for Nomads, perhaps 30 or so runs short against a generally much younger
Church Eaton side, most of who appeared to have played either on Saturday or in
the morning.
Nomads’ spirits were good as they took to the field. Hughes was
extracting considerable swing, though Hoddy at the other end was having unusual
difficulties with line and length. Hughes’ swing proved too much for both
openers as they nicked balls to Gardner. A further chance came when a difficult
caught and bowled deflected off Hughes’ hand. Forster replaced Hoddy and
although the ball was turning at this end, Guest was intent on smothering
everything, taking big strides and dead-batting regularly. Craddock became truly
Nomad-like as he threw the ball over the boundary attempting to pull it back!
However Greaves went for one shot, into what was previously no-man’s land, too
often and found the clearly-invisible Westwood’s safe hands. At 40 for 3, soon
to be 55 for 4 Nomads might have had a chance, unfortunately Hughes failed to
hold onto a regulation chance, dropping into his hands, from Guest, off
Westwood’s bowling and although Westwood secured a couple of dubious lbw
decisions, after failing to get one which was ‘about as plumb as they come’ (as
quoted from square leg [and others with a better view]). Despite being six down
Church Eaton were still batting strongly and racing towards their target, hence
another drop by Hughes at mid on, almost identical to the previous effort, only
denied a wicket for George.
Despite the defeat Nomads were upbeat about their performance but
with Bloxwich up next we will need to bowl a much straighter line, as 25 wides
here was not typical and might have been the difference. |
