Bring on the phoenix

Hughes’ decision to bat looked like it may pay off in the first nine overs as Nomads’ score moved steadily onto 48. Moss playing particularly aggressively, flicking the ball over the in-field. However, having got close to the outstretched fingers on several occasions he was caught in two minds by one that stopped a little and gave a simple return catch to first-change bowler, Darby. With his signature shot, Hughes then gave a high(ish) catch to disappear with his first (and hopefully his last) gonad of the season. Pinfield and Gardner were both having some difficulty with the good line and length along with turn and the rate began to drop from the early 6 an over towards, and below, 4. Wickets now began to fall regularly, although most batsmen got a start, only Forster got into double figures. Fortunately, the frequent addition of wides (28 in all) kept the score moving slowly. However a total of 131 did not look combative.

Hughes bowled with a good deal of swing although the Bloxwich openers were in an aggressive mood. Despite keeping to a good line and length in the most part, Forster’s gentler pace was just too inviting for Agrill(? I wish scorers would write more clearly!)), who pummelled him frequently. Further evidence that 131 might be fifty or so too few came when Collins replaced Forster. Despite Collins reputation as the most frugal of Nomads’ bowlers he was put away at almost 7 an over. Taking over from Hughes, Moss extracted excellent pace and swing and fully deserved the two wickets he managed to pick up. With a swoop and sharp throw in from square leg, by Pickering another Bloxwich wicket fell, but it was far too little and much too late, as Nomads repaired to the bar to lick their wounds.

Whilst Bloxwich clearly had a much stronger side than Nomads, they must be credited with giving all their players a four over spell.
