Longdon v Lichfield Nomads
Scores: Nomads 124
Longdon 125 for 3 Nomads run extends, extras fail to make the difference
Nomads last played
Longdon back in 1987. These were the days when scores in the low hundreds would
be sufficient for a sound win and, as the archives show, even 80 or 90 might be
enough. Of course Nomads have aged a little since then, backs creak, arms weaken
and even gravity doesn’t seem as strong when you need to get down quickly!
Caygill lost the
toss and Nomads were inserted on a very green wicket with, for the most part,
considerable bounce but with the odd one keeping low. Gardner and Caygill began
but scoring was slow as the bowling became more accurate. Despite the short
boundaries, Longdon appeared to know how to avoid Nomads’ batsmen finding them.
Wickets fell regularly with none of the top order getting going, although new
recruit Craddock began to look useful. At 55 for 7, then 69 for 8 it was looking
like an early tea and back to a pub with Sky for the T20 final. However, the
pitch began to get a little more benign and Longdon bowlers a little less
accurate leaving opportunities for Nomads tail to wag again. Blackburn senior
and Hoddy put together a useful partnership of 42, leaving Collins to face just
six balls at the end. Collins showed the rest of the Nomads how to do it with a
quick-fire 13, including a six off the last ball (the eighth delivery of the
over!).
Despite the
sterling efforts of the tail, 124 always looked short, although Longdon admitted
afterwards that they thought it a challenging total. Unfortunately it was not to
be, after the openers had gone for a mere 30 from the first 11 overs, including
the wickets of Gibbins caught hooking by the fleet-footed Pinfield and Davis
caught off his own bowling by Hoddy, just two balls after catching him off a
bump-ball. Vyse began to open up,
finding the square leg boundary with frequent pulls and hooks, irrespective of
where or how the ball pitched. Forster was getting considerable turn but only if
he threw it up high and at Greaves’ pace, leaving time for the batsmen to use
their feet. However he had one piece of luck as Chambers, failing to connect
with one that turned into his midriff, watched as the ball slowly rolled back
onto his stumps with just enough force to dislodge a bail, then seemed to hope
for clemency from the umpires!
After that it was
a procession, despite Caygill rotating his bowlers and encouraging all around
him frequently it was more a case of when, rather than if, as Vyse and Cameron
picked off the boundaries with regularity, Cameron finishing with a huge six off
a decent enough ball from Blackburn.
