Lichfield Nomads v
Queen's Head On a glorious June afternoon, the Nomads ran out convincing winners in a friendly against a Queen's Head side to claim the Stuart Ellison Trophy. The scorecard looked one sided. But it could have been much different if Nomads fielding had not been top notch. It took two stunning run outs, both direct hits, and a sharp slip catch to dismiss the three top QH batsmen cheaply. This left their batting exposed and even with Hughes rotating the bowlers, there was no way back into the match for the Queen's Head outfit. In true friendly style it was agreed that the Nomads would bat first and Brannigan got the innings off to a flyer with 24 off 20 balls, including a six and two fours. He was unlucky to be out flicking an over pitched, leg stump ball straight to square leg, where Willis took a sharp catch. Weir (9) and Westwood (16) didn't hang around either and the Nomads were rattling along at 5 an over. Stanley displayed all his usual concentration and application in support eventually falling for 9 with the score on 94. Gardner got in but then, unusually, was out stumped off Ings for 15. Craddock played an important knock scoring 25 before falling to Ball. Hughes fell to Ball too, clean bowled this time. Heslington (36) and Fearon (9) saw off Blackburn and George at the end to take the total to a decent 176 for 7 on a tricky pitch. It was noted that those four have over 1200 wickets for the Nomads between them. An excellent tea accompanied by Titanic Steerage (3.5% Golden Summer Ale) was followed by the Queens Head reply. They were quickly in trouble as Greaves tortured the openers and tempted Snapper, who was stumped by Gardner. Hughes took a blinding slip catch (apparently his first ever) to remove the dangerous looking McKumisky for 7. Ings was then spectacularly run out by Craddock. Who engineered a direct hit from square of the wicket with one stump to aim at. Greaves dismissed Wooton and Harvey cheaply. When Craddock had Ball caught by Brannigan the QH line up was in disarray at 18 for 6. Edmonds and Willis showed some resistance. Edmonds going for his shots and WIllis going for his dots. Once Willis got off the mark he seemed to lose his concentration and was out stumped, tempted by Stanley's flight (his first Nomad wicket). Edmonds provided the only sizeable innings of 32 and when he was bowled by Brannigan and Pinfield suffered the second direct hit run out, the game was pretty much up. Bebb was bowled by Hughes and George ended the game in a fitting fashion hitting son Nick for 4 and then being caught next ball. The players retired to the pub (The Queen's Head of course) to review the days play and enjoy some much needed refreshment. |
