Lichfield Nomads 199 for 4 Result: Lichfield Nomads won by 6 wickets
Quad stops play in Ray Jennett memorial match
Hinton began with experienced players, at least one of whom had 1st
team experience. Brannigan was back to his fiery best after looking tired the
previous day and was troubling both batsmen without luck. Hughes had elected to
go with the out-of-form Forster at the other end, who confessed to have only
lost line, length and rhythm, but was relieved to see Willis hold a good catch,
head high, at mid on. Westwood replaced Brannigan and Hussein took a good catch
from his first ball to remove Brooker. A 3rd wicket stand of exactly
100 saw Nomads beginning to look a little jaded in the field, after their early
night (or was it an early morning?), before Heslington returned. A stupendous
catch by Moss at square leg saw the back of Newport as Hinton began to eye 300.
This was the start of a small collapse, led by Heslington who finally went back
to his full pace, troubling all batsmen until first Brierley and Whitby, then
Brierley and Inger came together, running a four into the deep and pressing for
quick runs. Brierley’s speed between the wickets was proving difficult for his
partners as much as for Nomads, as he almost overtook his partner several times
and there were questions whether he had run five to his partner’s three! Roberts
came on for a brief spell with no luck, however Moss, with two, then Blackburn
cleaned up the tail to leave a target of just under 200.
Some excellent cake in a good tea saw Nomads open with Fearon and Heslington.
Both openers were happy for Antrobus to bowl frequent wides to keep the score
ticking along at just over the asking rate. However, having got into a good
position both openers were out almost together, as first Fearon failed to clear
the bowler, then Heslington tried for a speculative second run and was well
beaten by a good throw. Brannigan and Moss needed to settle things down and they
were not helped by a youth on a quad-bike, hotly followed by his mother on
another, circling the square a couple of times. However, tempers were settled
quickly, especially when the mother pointed out that she owned the ground!
Brannigan was batting with his usual power and Moss was guiding the ball
skilfully into the gaps in the field. However the darkening sky and increasingly
steady rain made it look that the match may be unfinished as the batsmen came
off with the score a little over 100. Fortunately, despite the gloomy outlook,
twenty minutes later saw the rain ease off and blue skies return, allowing the
batsmen to continue. Brannigan didn’t last much longer, though and was replaced
by Westwood, who took up where Brannigan had left off, guiding the ball with
power into any available space and reaching his PB. After Moss departed to a
good ball, marginally short of what would have been a deserving 50, Roberts
emerged, although a little hesitant at first he found his form to hit two good
boundaries, the second of which fittingly completed the win. |
