Sutton on the Hill
v Lichfield Nomads Sutton on the Hill 197 v Lichfield Nomads 164. A blistering century by Martindale looked to have took the game away from the Nomads but a marvellous fightback inspired by Kev Collins four wickets meant that Sutton on the Hill were dismissed for 197. Powerful knocks by Fearon (71) and Collins (39) meant that the Nomads were always up with the rate but regular wickets meant that the Nomads fell 33 runs short with 10 overs to spare. Report by Dave Pickering: Nomads faced Sutton, who were a man short, on a day that was warm and sunny in spite of the forecasts (and time lost in the Birmingham Test). The wicket was pitched on the far side, so that there was a very short boundary on the offside when the bowling was from the pavillion end. Martindale quickly began to dominate the bowling, with Hughes coming in for particular punishment. Hoddy was more economical and when Booth offered a skied chance back to the bowler, pouched the catch securely enough at the second attempt. Collins (K), replacing Hughes, exerted more control, but boundaries continued to come at a rapid rate. Fearon, fielding at deep mid-on, almost reached one chance, but most hits were well over the heads of the boundary fielders. At 159-3 after 16 overs, Nomads looked likely to be facing a very large total again. Collins took the vital wicket of Martindale for 125 and went on to take 4 well-deserved wickets. None of the other batsmen posed much threat. No-one could make much of Greaves and Heslington came on for 2 overs at the end and took 1 for 2, giving Westwood a 2nd catch to add to his stumping. Sutton were bowled out, leaving Nomads plenty of time to reach the target of 198. Sutton opened with Ashford and Booth and Heslington fell in the 2nd over to a ball that kept low. However, Fearon took a particular liking to Ashford's bowling, with boundaries all around the wicket. Weir and Westwood batted solidly, although the latter had a couple of narrow escapes before being caught on the short boundary. George (N) fell to Ashford's inswing. After Fearon was bowled by Martindale for 71, Pickering joined Collins and got off the mark with a thin inside edge that missed the leg stump narrowly. The introduction of spin at the pavillion end allowed Collins to reach the short legside boundary several more times. As the final hour or 20 overs started, Nomads needed 70 with 4 wickets left. Only a leg strain seemingly could prise the ball out of Ashford's hands and he finished his 15 over spell with some slower deliveries. Martindale switched to the far end and Booth came back at the pavillion end. With pace at both ends, the run-rate fell dramatically. Collins was bowled, having more than doubled his previous PB to 39, and Pickering had his off stump hit. Nomads never needed much more than 3 an over in the final stages, but were losing wickets steadily. Hoddy looked solid enough and managed to accumulate some runs, but lacked support at the other end. Stanley was bowled by another full delivery, Greaves fell to the first ball on target and Nomads were 33 short with 10 overs left. |
