King Collins tears down Wall (Jericho revisited)

With Wall struggling to make a full complement of players, whilst Nomads had an alleged 17 to pick from, Hughes volunteered to turn out for the opposition. Fortunately he wasn’t brought on to bowl until it was almost all over bar the shouting and also managed to spill a catchable chance and shepherd one or two balls to the boundary.

The Wall openers were clearly in no mood to press their feet against the accelerator early on, making sure they kept out the bowling of Hoddy and Brannigan. Accurate bowling along with the reluctance to go for it kept the score down to around 2 an over until well into the second ten. Hoddy removed Griffiths who finally decided to start attacking only to hole out to the trusty Collins snr. at mid on, then Collins himself, replacing Brannigan, struck two more blows, bowling Skermer and Venables with good flight and deception.

Unfortunately for Nomads later bowlers, this brought together Davis and Caddick who proceeded to raise the overall run rate very rapidly, with none of the later bowlers able to stem the tide and a drop from Hoddy off Forster’s bowling before Caddick had reached 15, made matters worse. Although Collins jnr. tried hard he was bowling much too wide for the umpire’s liking. A couple of fielding errors from the bowling of Collins snr, returning late on, made matters worse. First Blackburn continued to go for the catch, despite a loud call from Craddock, resulting in what could have been a nasty collision, but only saw the ball responding to gravity, and secondly, when Blackburn was presumably caught on the back foot and appeared rooted to the spot as the ball looped to within a metre of so of where he stood. A surge from Hatton late on left Nomads with a target of just over 200; gettable but would need at least one batsman to score well.

Fortunately, Nomads had that batsman. Gardner started steadily, but Hussein seemed ill at ease against some accurate bowling and missed a fullish ball that went through the gate. Collins jnr replaced him with the score on 10 in the fourth over and Hussein was joined in the ‘pavilion’ by Gardner in the next over. Collins was playing a circumspect game, crashing anything slightly loose to the boundary and defending stoutly to better balls. As his innings progressed boundaries of both varieties came more steadily as 40 of his first 50 came in fours. Brannigan had thrashed 24 at a surprisingly slow pace, for him, it taking all of 19 balls before an excellent running catch at cow corner saw him replaced at the wicket by Craddock. From this point on, more or less to the end, Nomads’ innings was a one-man-show, with the other batsmen giving Collins as much of the strike as they could, happy to watch from the other end as Collins demolished every variety of bowling put in front of him. A fine century duly arrived in the middle of a stand of 40 with Forster, as the latter scraped a mere 4 in the stand. Westwood arrived at the fall of the sixth wicket and quickly allayed any thoughts of a collapse with the end in sight, becoming only the third batsmen to reach double figures, with a quick-fire 11. Fittingly Collins finished it with a lofty six over the mid-wicket boundary, to be roundly congratulated for a fine performance by all players on both teams. According to the Chairman, this makes Collins only the 7th Nomads batsman to reach the magic ton. What an innings!
