Nomads run goes to Pott

Hughes chose to open the bowling with the extreme pace of Forster and Hoddy. Both bowlers hit a good length straight away and scoring was notably slow for the first six or seven overs. Just occasionally fours were struck from looser deliveries. Dawson managed to hole out to Hughes at mid off, the fielder holding a catch low down and on the run…remarkable! Thereafter it appeared that the only way for Nomads to get wickets was to let the batsmen reach half-centuries and then choose self-imposed retirement. Unfortunately, by then the score had spiralled beyond 170 and there was little else Nomads could do. The succession of bowlers tried out by Hughes all suffered much the same fate; Greaves bowling his first spell into a stiff ‘breeze’, not surprisingly, struggled with length giving the batsmen the opportunity to plunder. All this time Nomads fielding was particularly lethargic, with only Stanley and Forster contributing consistently well in this department. Hughes suffered with Hoddy dropping two catches at mid off from successive balls and then compounded this by dropping a harder chance from his own bowling. Once the top order was ‘removed’ (or removed itself), the later batsmen struggled to make any great contribution, but by then the damage was done. A good chase and throw by George removed Jackson, but it was all too little and too late for Nomads.

Gardner and Heslington began the reply steadily and Nomads were ‘up with the rate’ for an over or two! However Gardner was taken behind from a fine nick as he tried to steer through the gully and the rate dropped quickly. Collins, promoted up the order by Hughes, with the alleged hope of a challenge for the Gonad Trophy, was having none of it and struck several good blows through mid on, interspersed with a good deal of ‘wafting’ to wider deliveries. These two lifted the score to 50 after rather too many overs (18) before both disappeared within a few runs, Heslington being bowled round his legs and Collins missing a straight one for once. Thereafter Nomads innings was inclined to fold, rather meekly, although George, then Hughes, stayed for a while. Nomads boundary wags were convinced by Collins that Hughes would not dare go for the lofted drive, before he’d got off the mark, but Hughes couldn’t resist. Fortunately for him, the field was ‘in’ and he got away with it. (Clearly a well thought-out strategy by the captain!) The mood was only lightened towards the end when Heslington went out to umpire in his pads (still on, 10 overs after dismissal) ~ perhaps he was hoping to be recalled (??) with Pinfield at the other end, resplendent in his shorts.

Another disappointment for Nomads, in the Peaks and a long drive home mixed in with the Sunday drivers…. But at least it didn’t rain (just when you need a cloudburst!)
