Abbots Bromley v Lichfield Nomads 10th April 2011

The weather was warm and sunny as Nomads took to the field to play their first game of the season against Abbots Bromley. The home side batted first  and started  confidently with Parkinson retiring after making a well struck 50. Brannigan’s usual pace and lift was blunted by the early season pitch, which was slow. Westwood cut his speed, swung the ball and got the first wicket. After two more wickets fell in quick succession, one of which involved a stunning high catch at gully from Moss off Hughes’ bowling, Nomads started to apply the brakes to the Abbots Bromley innings. (This was after Moss had blocked a ferocious drive and was lucky to escape injury.) Collins bowled with considerable pace and narrowly missed a hat trick after clean bowling two batsmen at the end of his spell. Greaves, never to be underestimated, claimed a victim with the second ball of his first over. Bailey top scored with a valuable 60 at the end of the innings.  At a pleasant tea, which featured a range of tasty morsels, the Nomads felt they had reined in the Abbots Bromley batsmen to an achievable score of 189.

The Nomads innings got off to a steady start with an opening stand of 37. With pace at one end and seam at the other the Abbots Bromley bowling proved challenging. Moss continued to hit boundaries on his way to a well fought 33 but there were no partnerships of note in the middle part of the innings. When Moss was out, a low total seemed to be inevitable.  But this was not to be thanks initially to Stanley and Hussein who dug in, played each ball on its merits, and with several generous wides and byes from the bowlers, got the innings back on track.  Then Hughes and Blackburn took the attack to the bowlers and took the score within sight of Bromleys’s total until Hughes was lbw to Smith for a promising 22.

The match was played in a sporting spirit. Abbots Bromley were deserving victors and friendly hosts.  But this was a good team effort from the Nomads and Lee Westwood, their new captain, can take plenty of positives on to the next game
