Bugbrooke v Lichfield Nomads
Scores: Nomads 97 for 9;  Bugbrooke 100 for 4

Result: Bugbrooke won by 6 wickets

A disappointing afternoon for Nomads as most were forced into the Keith Stanley approach to scoring. Gardner had chosen the scenic route to Bugbrooke (omitting both Junctions 16 and 15A on the M1) and when Westwood lost the toss, Nomads were forced into the untried opening partnership of Heslington and Weir. Devonshire and Bashir opened with three maidens and there was continuing danger that the over count would outstrip the run count, however a fourth over flurry from Heslington (with two 4s and a further couple from the over) relieved the pressure in the pavilion. However these were the only runs Heslington managed to put together in his innings lasting nearly nine overs as the Bugbrooke bowlers kept up the intensity as variable bounce and a mixture of lengths kept the batsmen on their toes. This compounded by the lush outfield meant that ground strokes struggled to get much beyond the square, as Bugbrooke maintained a solid ring of young, athletic fielders (a description which might also describe the Nomads team ~ but on balance probably not!). Weir departed in the seventh over just as he appeared to be finding the middle of his bat, but having avoided the dreaded gonad. Gardner fished outside off and was well taken at slip by the same fielder who had dropped Heslington off the first ball of the match. In the meantime Bugbrooke’s sporting captain, Lamb, had called Hussein back after he was given out lbw (by the opposition umpire who accepted his error graciously as being the only man west of the M1 not to hear the distinct wooden click of leather on willow before the ball reached the pad). Nomads were pleased to see an excellent piece of sportsmanship here, with Hussein trying to make the most of his opportunity by top scoring (though only marginally from extras). George II struck a couple of well timed boundaries in a spirited innings which ended in the second of Nomads’ three runs out, however apart from Westwood trying to raise the tempo and a couple of well timed boundaries from Pickering, the Nomads innings folded all too soon for a disappointing 97. However, as pointed out on the balcony, the batsmen were clearly thinking of the bowlers’ figures, as by limiting the score, they ensured no bowler was going to go for an excessive number of runs!

Another excellent tea with plenty of tasty cakes possibly weighed down the Nomads fielding skills?

Westwood, opening the bowling from the pavilion end, had little luck, whereas Hoddy beguiled the batsmen from the far end and managed to snap up three good wickets. However with a relatively low target to chase and each bowler Westwood tried having just the one over that went for a few too many runs, Nomads were unable to prevent the inevitable. Only Hughes seemed to exert real pressure on the batsmen throughout his spell, with mainly good line and length and appreciable swing. Heslington bowled an excellent line and length until Bugbrooke were within sight of the total, when Coleman crashed him for 13 from what turned out to be his final over, but only after he had trapped the dangerous Chapman. George and Westwood showed good athleticism in the field and Greaves was unlucky with three difficult chances, getting a hand to all, but being unable to hold on to any.
