Coombs Wood v Lichfield Nomads
Result: Coombs Wood won by 6 wickets
The gravity of the Nomads side was bolstered by the late addition of Willis,
replacing Moss who had a late call on the musical front (‘Westies-side Story’,
perhaps?). A much more rapid start than last weekend with Gardner and the
younger Collins opening up. The latter was in fine form crashing the ball
regularly into the boundary wall and on one occasion far up the busy road, to
the possible surprise of a passing motorist. The opening stand had reached 75
when Gardner, having escaped with two top edges that looped to square leg (one
dropped, the other into the vacant position) was caught for a hard-fought 21.
Gardner’s replacement, Stanley, was watched by his father for the third time,
the elderly gent (Keith’s dad that is) seeing his son score for the first time
off only his eighth ball and rushing to 5 from only 28 balls before also being
caught. In the meantime Collins had gone for an excellent 72 out of a total of
108. Pinfield, Collins snr. and Hughes all got starts but a couple more runs out
(there were 3 last week, too) made it difficult to maintain the excellent start
the openers had made. Even so 171 was Nomads highest score to date, aided by a 5
for Blackburn, P (who will surely claim, in years to come, that they were all
run ~ the score book, of course, offers no evidence to the contrary).
Another excellent tea, including a chocolate fountain and Nomads took the field
with Hughes and Hoddy opening the bowling. As last week Hughes bowled an
excellent spell but without the luck he deserved, while Hoddy bowled tightly and
picked up wickets steadily, bowling through his full eight. Hoddy was unlucky
not to claim a fourth wicket as Hughes, at mid on, lived up to his epithet
‘hard-hands’, dropping a fairly regulation chance. He was to put down another
slightly harder chance later, off Forster. These drops though, were not a
reflection of Nomads fielding in general, as Pinfield pulled off a stunning
catch, diving full-length at the boundary edge pouching the ball inches from the
ground, rolling back the decades and avoiding the need for rolling the pitch.
Despite wobbling a little at 90 for 4, the Coombs Wood batsmen were just too
strong for Nomads and their knowledge of the pitch, and use of the very short
boundary on the pavilion side saw them through as they accelerated their score
with the finish in sight, Baker and Perruzza being particularly severe on
Forster’s sixth over which went for about (no details in score book) 15
(bugger!! Sorry chaps, there were nowt much up wit’balls). Pinfield completed
just two balls and was unlucky not to bag the wicket of Perruzza with his first,
as he said that would have shown the ‘bowlers’ how to do it!
A good game played in the right spirit, perhaps with one or two younger players
for Nomads (there were 8 over-50’s on one count) and the result may have been
different, but there was a feeling that Coombs Wood could have upped their game
to meet any challenge. Nomads again felt that 10 years ago they’d have beaten
this team (after all most of them would have been about 12 or less!). However
one footnote is the first Nomads wicket to be taken by a grandfather, unless you
know different?)
