Shugborough v Lichfield Nomads
Scores: Nomads 108 for 8 Shugborough 109 for 5

Nomads downed again.

Probably not the strongest of Nomads’ sides, but with the younger Blackburn unable to play, Nomads at least had a recognised opening partnership. Gardner and Heslington took the score along steadily to 34 by the end of the tenth over, but with only another single coming from the next 15 balls Heslington appeared to have struck a ball from outside off stump to the point boundary for six, only for Mason to take a good catch. Pickering tried to work the ball around but runs still came at a dribble. Gardner was trying to raise the rate when he fell, miscuing a sweep into the hands of the man lurking backward of square. Prince George played some elegant shots but at little more than two an over, Nomads were stuttering along. Hughes played a restrained innings with at least two balls being defended before he heaved effectively into the outfield. Things were looking a little better until he missed a straight one, bringing debutant Hutton to the crease, the new batsman being soon joined by Forster as George perished. Hutton looked good but played too early and skied the ball to Mason on the boundary, bringing Stanley in. Stanley and Forster tried to stick around long enough to raise the score to something approaching respectability, but with little in the way of pace between them, things were always going to be hard. Nevertheless, they managed some quick(ish) singles, with Stanley always willing to back up Forster’s calling as the pair put on a useful 39 for the seventh wicket until Stanley, frustrated at dotting the first four balls of the final over tried an unconventional shot and was trapped lbw. Blackburn arrived for the final ball but succeeded in only pushing the ball back to Bent who took a low catch. So for the second week running a Nomad scored a golden duck from the last ball of the innings.

Hoddy struck an early blow, removing Brewer as he and Heslington tried and more or less managed, to keep the lid on things. Hughes, replacing Heslington after five overs, took two wickets, both to catches by George who showed the feisty side of his nature to the first one as the batsman called for the single with ‘it’s alright it’s over his head’ only for George to take a good catch running backwards, then snarl at the batsman!! Although Forster managed to remove Mason and Hutton ran out Bennett, after he had ‘bowled’ him with a no ball and followed through to uproot a stump as the batsman unaware of the umpire’s outstretched arm left his ground (it might have helped if the umpire had called, rather than gestured the no ball, but fortunately Bennett took it in good spirit). It was only left for Shugborough to wrap up the win with 10 overs spare, leaving Mason on a well-paced 46.

A match played in considerably better spirit than the corresponding fixture last year, and debutant Hutton appearing to be a useful player. But still Nomads are left seeking their first win…. and so to Longdon.
