Nomads run gains impetus

Nomads arrived at Bloxwich with only ten men, fortunately a quick phone call from Pete Blackburn to son Graeme who had only just arrived home after working since 2am provided Nomads not only with their eleventh man but also a wicketkeeper. Nomads batted first and Moss (eventually asked by Hughes after Pinfield had padded up) along with Pinfield, opened up. On a pitch that was keeping low, the youthful Bloxwich attack kept Nomads pinned down early on and only the occasional well-struck boundary from Moss kept them up to 3 an over. Eventually Pinfield, feeling the need to push on, took one liberty too many and was caught at cover (ish). Hughes was initially bemused by the microscopic Bonniface L who beguiled him with a mixture of off-spin and arm balls. However he had just begun to find the middle of the bat when he fell in a way that is everyone’s nightmare – caught off a female (and for the second time in two years, this is becoming a habit!) as he went to try and push one through third slip. Brannigan upped the scoring rate with some typical lusty blows before also falling to a catch in the cover area. Almost immediately Moss, clearly tiring, after an excellent innings of aggressive power and, having already given a return catch chance to ‘the lady’, hit his off stump going for a late cut. Pickering and Collins K were becalmed for a couple of overs, before one outside leg and then one outside off allowed Pickering to first glance, then late cut for boundaries. However, he soon perished to a straight one. Nomads ‘youth policy’ arrived in turn, first George, then Blackburn jnr. Although neither pushed the scorers addition skills too far, they tried to keep the score ticking over, while Collins woke from his slumbers to crash a couple of boundaries to midwicket. The older Blackburn arrived with one ball to go and managed not to succumb as he had in the identical situation in his last match, at Shugborough.

Nomads were not convinced that their 161 was enough, but completed tea while watching Novak Djokovic finish off Rafa Nadal.

As Bloxwich began their reply Hughes opted for pace, or more correctly, complete lack of it, as Hoddy and Forster each bowled through their eight overs, with no personal success, although they kept the score down to just three an over. Only the minute Bonniface fell in this period run out by a direct hit from the covers, by George. Maddox fell to a steepling catch by Collins at backward square leg, in Brannigan’s first over, bringing in Mincher, Miss. Nomads employed tactical field placing to try to keep her on strike, and keep the run rate down. Hughes removed Golder after an excellent innings, stumped by Blackburn, despite the thoughtful keeper giving the batsman plenty of opportunity to regain his ground! McAree tried to up the rate but another excellent throw from George and a bit of quick glove-work from Blackburn saw him run out. It only remained for Alcock to strike a couple of boundaries as Bloxwich ran out of time and overs. In the last period, excellent bowling from Hughes, coming round the wicket, and Moss kept the lid on any attempt by the bats’men’ to reach the target and try as he might Hughes was unable to get the revenge on Mincher (Miss) that he so wanted.

So Nomads march on to WAHA, with a renewed spring in their stride.
