Ings ton in vain as Nomads stretch winning run
An excellent match
played in good spirit on a bright and breezy afternoon after the morning
downpour had put doubts in most players’ minds.
Nomads opened the
batting with the formidable pair of Westwood and Brannigan. These two got Nomads
off to a good start despite a fine spell of bowling by ‘Frank’. Bebb at the
other end was mixing good balls with 4-balls as the openers moved smoothly past
50. Just when it looked like they might put on a seriously big stand Brannigan
was caught for an excellent 32, as the score stood on 58. However Gardner,
replacing Brannigan, kept up the run rate with Westwood and after a slightly
uncertain start developed a good innings as he rediscovered his best form and
played shots all around the wicket. Westwood perished trying to pinch a single
to retain the strike, soon after he had reached his maiden 50. The younger
Blackburn played a brief but forceful innings before falling to a stumping of
‘dad’s’ bowling as he mistimed his swing. No doubt Blackburn senior will claim
crowing rights on that one for many a year, but honours were more or less even!
Weir blasted away for a useful 22, before first Heslington and then Stanley fell
for dreaded gonads and Forster was not far behind with just 4, as the batsmen
tried to ‘up’ the score without time to settle in, in the last few overs.
A decent tea and
Nomads took the field, opening with the twin H’s of ‘eslington and ‘oddy. The
former bowled an excellent line and length and between them the openers kept the
score down well. Westwood replaced Heslington and drew Skermer into giving a
catch behind from his first ball, then continued to bowl an excellent line,
taking two further wickets. However, with Queen’s Head falling behind the
required rate Ings with McClusky and later Coombs began to attack the slower
bowlers with gusto, as first Forster then, particularly, Greaves came in for
some fearful hammer. Fortunately Brannigan kept things very quiet from his end,
before being replaced by Gardner for the final over. Ings went to his century
off the last ball of the match although Nomads had certainly helped him along,
dropping him a full 6 times from fairly straightforward chances, along with a
couple of missed stumpings as he went walking down the wicket.
The teams, or at
least those who were let out, repaired to the Queen’s Head for an excellent
repast of chilli, curry and rice and chips.
So Nomads move on to
Woore tomorrow, having pulled back 0-8 to 5-8, although the weather forecast is
not promising
