Lichfield Nomads v Kenilworth

Scores:  Nomads 140 for 8; Kenilworh 141 for 5
Result:  Kenilworth won by 5 wickets.

Even with 27 members , Nomads again found themselves short and required 2 guest players to attain a team of 11. Nomads batted first and our 2 guests opened. They maintained a good rate of 5/over thanks mainly to the erratic bowling of Phillips but in the 9th over McCumsky did not play at a ball from Phillips which came back and hit the wickets. Fearon went out and was watchful for a couple of overs and then started to get after the bowling with 90 being reached after 21 overs. However Kelsey found that bowling full tosses was a good ploy with Fearon lbw to one and Gorton caught off one. Weir and Pickering shone briefly with Weir bludgeoning the ball in front of the wicket and Pickering late cutting through slips behind the wicket. Both reached the same score of 11 in their own ways. After this the innings subsided with Hughes out for a duck to a sharply turning ball, Collins caught by an outstanding catch by the bowler, George just failing to ensure winning the Gonads trophy by failing to get a duck and then Stanley and Hoddy seeing out the 40 overs. 83 scored in the first 20 overs and only 57 in the second 20.

Defending a total 50 runs short of a good total was always going to be difficult. Fearon struck in his opening spell with 2 wickets and Hoddy was steady at the other end without posing a great threat. Stranks and Kerry took few risks but ran some excellent quick singles making Nomads look a bit ‘Indianesque’ in the field. Hughes rang the changes bringing himself on and then Greaves to tempt the batmen but to no avail. Only when Collins came on did wickets begin to fall (he will be sadly missed if he has to retire from cricket), but it was too little too late and the opposition reached their target with 4 overs to spare, with 14 year old Lane reaching his maiden 50. A match played in a good spirit and opposition worth keeping I would suggest.
MVP Andy Gorton 10, Paul Fearon 1.
