Coombs Wood v Lichfield Nomads
Scores: Nomads 196 for 4, Coombs Wood 200 for 3
There goes Another Season
It always seems to be over so quickly,
yet another season ends . A lovely end of season day saw us at Combs Wood , home
of some fine beers. My heart dropped a bit when I saw a couple of Asian lads
playing as they always seem to be of a high standard. Westwood won the toss and
elected to bat opening with Collins, C and Gardner. The lads scored freely at
one end against Chappell but were
tied out the other end by Tandir who eventually clean bowled Collins for 18. The
runrate was good however at a tad under 6 per over.and Westwood played a steady
knock of 14 before being bowled by Steve. This brought in George who failed to
cement his grip on the Gonads trophy by getting off the mark. Nervous moments
for Heslington and Stanley who were contenders. George and Gardner set about the
bowling and managed to get to a healthy 116 off 24 overs before Gardner get
under a ball from Butterworth to send up a steepling catch which was well taken
by the fielder. Heslington came in and after a cautious start accelerated to
give a cameo 25 before he too was bowled . This left a couple of tricky overs
for Stanley who was delighted to get off the mark, punching the air in his
enthusiasm and as usual he missed. The innings closed at 196-4 with George
attaining his pb, 1st 50 and gonad trophy.
A
fine tea followed.
Allowing for the fast outfield and short
boundary, on one side, 196 always looked to be a little under par. However a
solid start by Westwood and Hoddy kept the runrate pegged down. Goodway looked a
little surprised to be given lbw. However this brought in Khan who attempted to
hit a 6 or 4 off every ball. The bowlers wer gald to see him go off a good catch
by Collins who dived forward to get his hands under the ball before it hit the
ground. Boswell was out without troubling the scorers to a good catch by Stanley
off Hoddy. However now Jones and Mamhood settled down and kept the required
runrate at just about 6/over. Greaves was brought on to buy a wicket but the
batting was too good and Collins replaced him. Despite bowling several wides ,
Collins was not too uneconomical and perhaps should have stayed on but he
elected to come off. Our last chance probably went when Hoddy failed to hang to
a catch given by Mahmood off Hughes The batsmen then accelerated to win
comfortably
Another enjoyable season . Roll on the
Captain’s curry on Friday
