Greaves makes hay in the hail

Keith Greaves might never make a farmer but he made hay in a hail storm in mid-April.

New captain Heslington had marshalled a strong team for the delayed season’s opener, Unfortunately prince George had to call off late on and erstwhile umpire Forster was drafted in, despite his inability to do most things physical! Heslington’s power of authority was clear from the start as all Nomads arrived before the first ball was bowled, although Westwood was less than ‘fresh’ from working overnight. New recruit Chris Jones was presented with his cap by the captain before proceedings got underway (and was immediately billed by the treasurer!). Heslington decided that Westwood should open with Gardner, before the former fell asleep and despite Frost’s frugality at one end, they moved the score along steadily, with useful byes and some powerful hitting. Unfortunately, with the score on 17 Gardner missed a very full and straight ball from Sheikh and was bowled. Moss started swiftly with a fortuitous 4 off a thick edge flying over the wicketkeeper and could well have fallen before he got going, as a direct hit from Ruppelt had him struggling to make his ground after an over-enthusiastic call from Westwood. Only the umpire’s uncertainty saved him in the close call, although with no ‘technology’ available, the batsmen had to be given any benefit of the doubt. Nomads moved along smoothly at around five an over, despite the damp outfield, slightly long grass and slopes rising to the boundaries at both sides of the wicket. Occasional flurries of good shots were interspersed with decent length, though rarely threatening bowling. Moss kept the fielders on their toes and good contributions were made down the order, with even Stanley racing to his 5 off only 17 balls. Jones contributed well at no. 6 with a strike rate of 127, but again fell to a straight full ball. Heslington was in a positive frame of mind, striking the ball firmly before being caught at full stretch in the covers. Nomads finally reached 192 with a top score of 55 from extras.

An excellent tea left Nomads ready to face the elements as the Bugbrooke reply began. Multiple jumpers were helpful, but the tough Brannigan and Westwood decided to do without (to be truthful, they’d forgotten them!) Brannigan and Hoddy opened the bowling, the latter steady and the former bowling faster than Gardner can remember him doing so (or maybe the ‘keepers gloves are wearing thin – or hands going soft in retirement, with no more ears to clip?). Brannigan troubled all the batsmen with his excellent spell and laid the foundations of the win as he ripped through the top order, aided by a good diving catch from Westwood and a regulation one by Gardner off a rising ball which just clipped Ruppelt’s glove on the way through. Heslington was moving the field intelligently, as the bowlers kept to ‘the plan’, on a couple of occasions moving a fielder to an unconventional spot only for the ball to go straight to him. Jones fielded smartly and quickly caught on that he had to cover behind the less than agile slip/gully cordon of Forster, Stanley and Hoddy as well as look after his duties at point. Fielding was tight although Brannigan clearly incensed by Gardner spilling a nick earlier, took aim at the ‘keeper, rather than the stumps as the batsman scrambled; thus sending Gardner sprawling backwards in a heap. Hoddy finished his spell, as Bashir and Hook began to raise the pace of the reply and Heslington brought Greaves on to weave his magic. The generally youthful Bugbrooke batsmen had probably not encountered this kind of pace before and appeared rooted, as they poked and prodded or occasionally played a little early, only to lift the ball into waiting hands. Westwood pitched in as Heslington did a passing impression of Kevin Collins, taking two steps backwards before running in to take a catch low down – perhaps this was not surprising as the batsman had recently lifted one over his head. Hughes completed the innings as Moss joined a cluster of 6 fielders with one catch to their name.

A thoroughly sound performance from the whole team, including notable achievements, apart from Jones’ debut. A Michelle for Greaves, A first ‘win in April’ since 2007 and to top it all Greaves reached the 200 wickets mark for Nomads. (unfortunately KG has used the excuse ‘Janice has gone off with my wallet’ before at this venue, so his inability to buy the anticipated double jug [or pay his match fee] was not unexpected).
