Nomads struck down by Strikers

A youthful-looking Strikers side arrived for Nomads first ‘home’ match at Bit-end field. Nomads were without the hoped-for Moss and Hutton who had been called to higher things (is there anything higher?) and a glance at the team sheet revealed a degree of frailty in both batting and bowling lines-up. Nevertheless the available Nomads put up a good fight, eventually going down in a good-spirited match.

Strikers opening attack put pressure on Nomads batsmen. The bowlers appeared to have just two types of ball – either a good line and length or wide, so extras began to make its usual contribution despite the opening batsmen struggling to get going, Westwood making just two scoring shots from 23 balls being a prime example. Westwood was eventually bowled, attempting to clip one behind square, in the eighth over, with the score on 20 and extras top scoring with 9. Weir’s brief stay ended with him clipping what looked (at least from the boundary) suspiciously like a high no ball into space close to the wicket, him haring down the wicket screaming for the run (was he trying to put off the fielder?), while Gardner stood his ground. Jones was just getting into his stride when another good ball rattled the stumps, while Stanley attempted to raise the scoring rate with a few quickly taken singles. Hughes played with his usual flair and was the only Nomads batsman to really put bat to ball reaching his 19 at a strike rate above 100, but was then out in the usual way – caught trying to lift one too many out of the field. Gardner was eventually 5th out for a well-fought top score of 29. Strikers bowling tightened up over the second half, with few extras being given away and even their eighth bowler kept immaculate line and length so the later Nomads batsmen all struggled to get the ball away. A lusty couple from Bourne, on debut, was quickly ended as he missed a ball from Nitin and with batsmen running out Blackburn was reminded of the need to dig in and see the overs out. However, another lusty swing saw him bowled first ball. It was left to Pickering and Forster to try to eke out what they could in the last few overs.

A stupendous tea, despite Pinfield taking some of it to the Baggies in his car (!!!) and Pickering asking one of the opposition if he could ‘inspect your shoes’  - was it for spikes or a bomb, we wonder?

Nomads were perplexed as the Striker’s first umpire took up his place at an unconventional mid-wicket position and a second was also unsure where to stand, but this was surely a ploy as opener Badri was quick to hit anything that was a little short. Westwood was offering one such ball each over as the Strikers score mounted too quickly. Just when he seemed to be gaining the necessary control with a wicket maiden, his next over went for 21 as he tried to up the pace but only succeeded in bowling shorter. Hughes at the other end bowled particularly well, opening with three maidens and the wicket of Wasim. However, Nomads needed to swap it round to try for the next breakthrough and Greaves, although bamboozling the batsmen on several occasions, could not do that this week, although Bourne did manage to get one through Badri’s defence on the third bounce. Jones’ first over was a little loose but he improved considerably. Blackburn replaced the tiring Bourne and snapped up three good wickets but another wide eventually gave the game away.

Strikers generally accurate bowling saw them concede only six boundaries (+27 in wides), and their batsmen complemented this with five sixes and a further 16 boundaries. Nomads can look forward to the return match, when a stronger team might be able to put more pressure on.
