Lichfield Nomads v D2
Scores: Nomads 171 all out, D2 172 for 6
Result:  D2 won by four wickets.

Fantastic start fails to bring victory.

Lichfield Nomads posted a decent 171 and reduced D2 to 0 for 3. But a superb fight back, marshalled by SMC, secured an impressive victory for D2 (Sutton Police)

Nomads batted first in pleasant sunshine and a steady start saw Gardner and Westwood put on 31 before Gardner fell lbw, to one that kept low. Westwood was next out, bowled by a full length delivery. Fearon and Jones added 34 against some classy spin bowling from Savery before Fearon leathered one straight to mid-off who took a good catch. Jones was bowled almost immediately and Nomads were 71 for 4 but still had plenty of batting to come. Bourne and Rolfe played some entertaining strokes. Bourne scored 9 and Rolfe posted 11, including a 6. It was Brannigan who fired the innings to respectability. He was soon in the groove and striking the ball well. Hitting six 4s and three 6s before holing out on 49. Last wicket pair Hoddy and Pete Blackburn saw the Nomads through to the 40th over before Hoddy succumbed to Bebb to leave Nomads on 172. This was reduced to 171 all out when a query over a no ball was cleared up by umpire Hughes.

After an excellent tea, Brannigan and Hoddy got off to a fantastic start reducing the visitors to 0 for 3 with a classy opening spell. Hoddy bowled his 8 overs straight through and took 2-17. Westwood replaced Brannigan (2-26) and Heslington replaced Hoddy.

The wicket was drying out and D2 probably had the best of the conditions for batting. MCS and Snyman took control of the game for the visitors, patiently building a partnership. A superb run out by Brannigan saw Snyman dismissed and the important partnership broken. But SMC continued to marshall the intelligent run chase and when the Nomads needed a wicket, the ‘force’ built another excellent partnership.

As D2 closed in on the target Fearon had Martin R caught by Blackburn at mid-off but it was too little too late. Blackburn bowled what proved to be the final over and D2 brought up victory with six overs to spare.
