Lichfield Nomads v Sunseekers
On a damp day and with the threat of
rain always there, Lichfield Nomads won the toss and elected field. A cautious
start was always on the cards and bowlers Brannigan and Hughes had to work hard
for a breakthrough under difficult footing. A straight forward catch by George
at extra cover off the bowling of Hughes to dismiss Downes bought the dangerous
Taylor to the wicket. His short spell at the crease, in which he plundered 35
runs, was bought to an end by a caught behind by Blackburn off the bowling of
Fearon. This was the start of a very good spell of tight bowling by both Fearon
and fellow change bowler Westwood. Next to depart was Coxon from a good catch,
again at mid wicket, by Brannigan from Westwood’s bowling, As Fearon conceded
little at the one end, Westwood continued to make inroads. He bowled Govan with
a ball that turned the batsmen 90 degrees and then he encouraged Carpenter to
tickle the ball onto his own stumps. The left handed Ashton’s solid innings was
ended on 49 when he was caught at Mid on by Heslington off Westwood’s bowling.
It was after this period that it rained and an early Tea was taken. On the
resumption the change bowling did its best with the wet ball. Moss clean bowled
Coxon R and the rush for runs at the end precipitated the run out of Sibson
leaving the Sunseekers total catchable.
The Lichfield Nomads openers were soon
parted when Stanley was caught behind off the bowling of Coxon. With the arrival
of Westwood steady progress was being made but with the score on 28, Gardner
holed out to Taylor off the bowling of Coxon. Moss joined proceedings and after
having a look started to play some good shots and the total moved along. After
drinks, Westwood and Moss accelerated and after adding 47 in 7 overs Westwood
was eventually run out for a fine 44. Moss continued to punish the bowling now
struggling with the ball but was eventually caught by Ashton off the bowling of
Taylor. Rolfe had to retire hurt with a pulled muscle but Fearon came in and
contributed a positive 20 runs and ensured the Nomads were victorious with 4
overs to spare.
