Lichfield Nomads Cricket Club : Match Reports 2012 |

Sutton on the Hill v Lichfield Nomads The Nomads returned to the scene of an early season victory expecting to face a team wanting revenge. We were not disappointed. After winning the toss Heslington elected to field and thus , hopefully, maintain control of the game. Brannigan and Hoddy opened with the new ball. A solid start by Sutton saw Booth and Hall defending but hitting lusty blows when the bowling faltered. Brannigan turned to a round-the-wicket attack which saw him bowl 2 of the batsmen round the legs. Hoddy also tempted Hall with a wide ball and stand-in keeper Weir took a good feathered catch off Hall’s favourite shot , the cover drive. However the always dangerous Martindale was at the crease and employing his usual policy of hitting sixes maintained the run-rate at 5 per over. Change bowler Westwood was bowling well and was unlucky that some sloppy fielding saw chances not taken. However a slower ball (a la Fearon) tricked Martindale into missing the ball and he was clean bowled. The subsequent drop in the run-rate off Westwood and Collins (closing in on his 50th wicket for Nomads) gave heart to the Nomads team but after a slow start, Prince and Trevatt, D hit some good shots before captain Heslington coming off his short run polished off the tail. Overall a good bowling performance, Nomads bowling 46 overs at exactly 4 per over and taking all 10 wickets. After the usual fine tea, Nomads went out with some hopes of victory although 197 off a probable 36 overs was quite a target against what we knew was a good bowling attack. However opening with the “dashers” – Westwood, Rolf, Jones, Weir and Brannigan should allow us to attempt the run-rate with the lower order of Pinfield, Heslington, Stanley etc to steady the ship if required. However in the words of the Scottish Bard “The best laid schemes o’ mice and men gang aft agley”. The opening bowlers Trevatt, D and Day bowled fast and straight and disciplined and the wickets fell. There is little to be said, Weir ran himself out, Pinfield chipped one of Trevatt’s few poor balls straight to a fielder. After the damage was done Ashford and Prince polished off the tail and an early visit to the pub for beer and chips ensued. Interesting details of the match were that all the wickets fell and that 15 of the 20 were clean bowled, and that Nomads’ batsmen achieved 5 ducks amongst them, thus maintaining much interest in the Gonads Trophy.
