Walsall Health v Lichfield Nomads
Nomads arrived at Aldridge
thankful to be playing in such a wet Summer. Heslington lost the toss and we
were put in a soft but drying pitch. The tried and trusted opening duo of
Gardner and Heslington was resurrected and proceeded to give Nomads a solid
platform on which to build. As usual for this season, Heslington fell to a
splendid diving catch and also as usual Gardner was dropped and also avoided
easily being run-out when the keeper
unexpectedly dropped the throw from deep. Nontheless a score of 84 off 25 overs
was a good base on which to accelerate. Unfortunately, Fearon and Westwood were pinned down,
as they started their innings, by good accurate bowling from Stephens in
particular. A spell of just 11 from 5 overs set the Nomads cause back and even a
later acceleration in run-rate only gave a modest total of 147.
After a splendid tea, Nomads
were determined to make any victory for the opposition as difficult as possible.
The regular opening combination of Brannigan and Hoddy (sounds like an old music
hall comedy duo- some would say bowl like one as well!) put the pressure on with
Brannigan in particular bowling an amazing 7 maidens in his 8 over spell. He
also achieved a run out when attempting a sharp return catch by deflecting the
ball onto the wicket with the non-striker backing up too far - and had a catch
dropped. Hoddy did not quite have his usual control of length and a couple of
attempted “flighted” balls turned into full tosses and were dispatched to the
boundary, He did bowl an unplayable delivery which (with little exaggeration) pitched a foot outside off-stump and
turned and lifted to pass a foot over the top of middle stump easily beating
both the batsman and keeper. With only some 35 runs off 16 overs the opening
pair completed their allowance. It was a good start but with only two wickets
down Walsall still had plenty of batting to come and the run-rate was still
under 5 per over. Greaves and Westwood entered the fray. Westwood seemed tired and did not bowl with his
usual command and the batsmen coped well with Greaves waiting for the odd short
ball to hit. Walsall were now up with the scoring in Nomads innings and even the
introduction of Heslington and Fearon could not slow things down. Walsall
eventually achieved their target with 4 overs to spare.
Overall Nomads were a little
lacking in all departments. Some 30 or 40 runs short of a good score, bowling a
few too many loose balls and dropping 4 catches. 20 more runs, an over fewer bad
balls and 2 catches caught could have made for an interesting game.
