NCI CC v Lichfield Nomads
Day 1
Although already knowing that the Saturday match had been cancelled, Nomads
travelled as planned to acclimatize and for match preparation. After meeting up
at mid-day, we went our separate ways for a blend of culture, sight-seeing and
pub surveying. My particular highlight was seeing a man singing and playing
guitar in a waste paper bin (contact P Gardner for photographic evidence). I
went out later to meet most of the Nomads at a pub, “Cambridge Blue”, which had
lots or real ale, at prices which were not too southern, plus a good selection of bottled
foreign beers. Later Captain H turned up with MP, CB & LW. After several more pints
(an unnamed Nomad - Ed.) tried to hi-jack someone else’s taxi
to move on. At this stage I went back to our accommodation for an early
night.
Day 2
A bright and early start (for some)
to a good breakfast and blue skies. It seemed likely that the game would be on
and an early pitch inspection confirmed our hopes. After mooching round
Cambridge in the morning, we all met up early for some fielding practice.
Eventually the opposition arrived and we took the field, with a guest player to
fill in for Dan Moss who had not been able to make it. Brannigan and Hoddy , as
usual, opened the bowling and soon had the opposition in trouble with 2 wickets
each. At one stage the opposition were 10-4 and a certain Nomad sheepishly
admitted to me later that he had felt sorry for the opposition at that stage.
However we always seem to encounter someone who plays well and Young played
sensibly and started to accumulate runs. Although he was coming off the back of
5 ducks this season, he played each ball on its merit and having survived a
couple of chances ended up with a deserved 97no. Westwood and Heslington came on
and bowled well with little reward and then Ball came on and took 2 wickets to
catches by Brannigan in the covers , the first a superb one-handed,
over-the-head effort which had the batsman gasping in disbelief, the second
lodged in the groin area and had Brannigan gasping in pain. Hughes and our guest
player came on and Young went after them to try to set a good score. Brannigan
came back for 3 overs to complete his spell claiming another 2 wickets. A final
score of 165 was a little higher than we would have liked.
