Woore v Lichfield Nomads
Capt H being unavailable
Vice-capt H2 took over. He put in Woore and was unpleasantly surprised when his
2nd ball was switch hit for 6 over the nearby houses. On enquiry the
opposition Captain said he had been a bit short and found a couple of lads who
played a little. Apparently said lads were 1st team league players.
Nevertheless Hoddy could have had both openers with one ball going between bat
and pad but just missing the wicket and another ball actually played onto the
stumps but without the pace to dislodge the bails. He also ran out the batsman
backing up too far (some doubts as to whether this is possible according to
rules) but withdrew his appeal. However Hoddy was replaced by Greaves who it was
thought might be a bit of a shock to these batsmen. Not so. Westwood bowled well
at the other end but with 100 coming off 12 overs the game already seemed out of
reach. One opener retired at 50 and the other was caught to a brilliant
one-handed catch by Gardner who was fielding at deep mid-on. The game now became
somewhat less surreal. Collins bowled a solid 8 overs and Hughes bowled well for
5 overs but seemed to tire and his last 3 overs cost 42 runs. Blackburn P was
shocked when his first over went for 21 runs but rallied well and a 3 over spell
by Nick George had the remarkable figures, especially for this match of 4
wickets for 7 runs . A total of 271 seemed likely to be too much for Nomads.
A good start by openers Gardner
and Westwood at a run-rate of 5 per over would have been very satisfactory for
most matches. However Westwood fell and then George was out bowled 1st
ball by one that kept low. Weir and Hughes did not stay long. This enabled
Pickering to have some batting practice with an extended spell at the crease for
16. Collins hit a brisk 15 but the rest succumbed quickly for a total of 145 off
35 overs. Nomads wel defeated but at least everyone got a bat or bowl
