Nomads Storm Back

Nomads arrived at Wednesbury fielding a strong side , even with the late replacement of Dan Moss (industrial injury) by guest player Sid Page. Nomads batted, and started briskly with regular openers Gardner and Heslington looking at ease with the bowling. A steady start saw 24 off 6 overs but then Gardner did not quite time a cut and was caught at gully. No real problems with Nomads batting down to 11. Westwood starting knocking fours but then he ran on a Heslington shot to backward square. Heslington was taken by surprise and set off late just failing to make his ground. Wednesbury seemed to have a policy of giving everyone a bowl and the 2 replacement bowlers were very miserly with only 13 going off their 10 overs this may have caused some panic and an almost carbon copy run-out saw the dangerous Fearon depart for a meagre 3 runs. Caygill was out to a good ball which kept a bit low and Hughes was a bit ambitious mistiming a lofted shot off only his second ball. Rolfe appeared bamboozled by a ball which pitched outside leg and then hit off stump and Page lofted a catch without troubling the scorers. 77 for 7 off 25 overs was not what was anticipated. However we still had Westwood , Brannigan, Pinfield and Hoddy to attain some respectability. However the madness continued with Brannigan running out Westwood and then being bowled. The last wicket stand saw the opposition give us generous allowance of extras before Hoddy played onto the wicket via the back of his front foot. 109 all out – not the stuff of wins. Some understandable comments about a waste of a Sunday were heard and Nomads went out determined to salvage some pride.

Again regular opening bowlers Hoddy and Brannigan were called on. The opposition openers did not need to take any risks and although only 43 runs came off the openers 16 overs , this was up with the run rate at the loss of no wickets. However Westwood bowled magnificently and started taking wickets aided from the other end by Hughes. In sight of victory Wednesbury tried to end things too quickly and wickets tumbled giving Nomads a glimmer of hope and the opposition some trepidation. Heslington and Fearon came on for a last effort. Heslington bowled the oppositions lady player – but wait  a late call of no-ball dashed his hopes. Scores tied ; two wickets to fall; the field come in to stop any singles but Mohammad , who had nursed the tail, found a gap in the field and the tie is denied. A valiant bowling and fielding effort by Nomads after what can only be described as a poor batting performance
