Nomads outgunned

On the event (almost) of his 60th birthday, Hoddy was captain for the day. Unfortunately, Nomads could not raise themselves to add to his celebrations.

Hoddy won the toss and elected to bat. Gardner and Heslington enjoyed some loose bowling early on and raced to 43 in the 5th over. Heslington was particularly aggressive, being the main beneficiary of the second over from Dale which went for 19. Uncharacteristically Gardner was then bowled round his legs, the ball flicking the top of leg stump, as Banks gained some movement in the air. Stanley arrived, as Heslington continued to take the attack to the opposition. However, Banks was still troubling the batsmen, removing first, the left-handed Stanley, as he followed a ball outside off, then the right-handed Brannigan, first ball, as he repeated the manoeuvre. Rolfe avoided the hat-trick and was soon joining Heslington in attacking mode but with the stand at 18, Heslington didn’t quite follow through with a shot and was caught for a bold 36. Jones showed some classic shots, but was thwarted by finding fielders in the wrong spots. Rolfe’s brief, but effective, flurry came to an end on 19, leaving Nomads at a perilous 92 for 5. This soon became 109 for 7, as first Jones was bowled by ….. Jones, then Westwood followed a lifting ball and got a faint snick to the keeper. With more than half the overs to go things were not looking positive for Nomads, however, Hughes lifted the spirits with a 6 from his first ball, as he singularly failed to follow Gardner’s suggestion of trying to play it ‘along the floor’!! Hughes and Forster played sensibly as they tried to eke out the overs, gathering runs wherever possible, but at 18, Hughes fell to another catch. Greaves started tentatively, but held his ground as the 9th wicket pair tried to keep the bowlers at bay and he was just beginning to look like he could  do some damage when Forster was bowled by one of Dale’s few straight balls. A flowing drive for four, from Greaves and a few singles followed until the last over when Greaves, in classic fashion, lofted one into the air, barely 5 metres from the bat and hared off down the wicket, with one hand on his helmet and bat held like a sabre in the other, as Hoddy watched, unmoved, from the other end. Considering middle order difficulties Nomads had reached a half-decent score, aided considerably by the ever reliable twelfth man, “extras”.

A high quality tea, with excellent cakes and Nomads 187 began to look defendable, despite the excellent batting track and when Brannigan shattered the stumps of the South African opener with his second ball, they may have even begun to believe it. However this was not to be as the Swynnerton batsmen took the attack very firmly to the Nomads bowlers, even placing the ball between fielders (the audacity of it!!). Unfortunately the rest of the Swynnerton innings is lost in the mists of time as the data were not received from their electronic score book until mid-December!! – suffice it to say they, and particularly Bennett, N took the attack to the bowlers and knocked off the runs with plenty of time to spare. Of minor amusement is that the electronic records identify a certain ‘I Huges’ amongst our team!
