Scores: Coombs Wood CC 256 for 4, Lichfield Nomads CC 140 for 6.

Result: Lichfield Nomads CC lost by 116 runs

This game was played with both sides only having 10 men available to play. A positive start by the Coombs Wood batsmen, helped by some friendly bowling, precipitated Butterworth’s retirement on 51. This and a change in bowling slowed the scoring rate down. Bebb, on debut, bowled well and was well worth his two scalps. He and Greaves bowled in tandem and Greaves, who bowled from the Coombs road end with a short boundary on the leg side, had the dangerous Mahmood caught by Westwood on that boundary. When the second change bowlers Heslington and Blackburn had claimed their wickets the score was reasonable but acceleration in the last six overs by Goodway, chasing his century, put the score out of reach.

Openers Gardner and Pinfield batted with purpose but tight bowling by Mahmood gave little hope of an effort to obtain the total materialising. After Gardner’s run out, Pickering played stylishly until caught close in. Pinfield continued his fine end of season batting form before being caught. Hughes started good, but finished badly, Westwood was clean bowled by one that kept its line. Bebb was on the end of another run out disaster and Blackburn G and Heslington did themselves no harm batting out the final few overs of the season.

The Nomads were beaten by one of the many teams in our fixture list who can play a stronger batting side and beat us at will. A couple more in form younger batsmen are needed in our armoury and maybe then we can get closer to their scores.
