Bugbrooke v Lichfield Nomads
Result: Bugbrooke won by 9 wickets
Nomads had recorded a good win at Bugbrooke last year and arrived in hope of
going 2-0 ahead for the season… but things didn’t quite turn out as they had
hoped
Hoddy lost the toss again and Nomads were asked to bat on the artificial surface
which would hopefully provide more consistent bounce than last week’s wicket.
Opening bowler Cross surprised Gardner with a head-high bouncer, first ball, but
after a bye Heslington, facing only his third ball, got a good edge to one that
kept a little low and was taken by the keeper.
Weir joined Gardner and the pair moved the score along to 22, helped by a
number of extras, when Weir was bowled by Bashir to another one that didn’t get
up. Jones attempted to see off the openers with some solid defence but after
adding only two, was again bowled. Bourne replaced Jones and after last week’s
‘golden’ was looking to use the experience he’d gained from the Edgbaston nets.
This time he got the middle of the bat to his first ball but only managed to
guide it smoothly into the waiting hands of Thomas short on the off side. So… an
early move for the Gonads trophy by Bourne but others were not to be so easily
put off in their attempts to claim the illustrious golden protector as
Pickering, Forster and then Greaves all joined him and Heslington on the
‘naughty step’!! Only Collins with some lusty blows and Hoddy with solid defence
managed to keep the Bugbrooke bowlers at bay for any length of time, although
Hughes had at least reached double figures before being bowled playing a
defensive shot!!! Nomads were surprised to find that, as last week, they had
reached precisely 86 runs and were heartened by the knowledge that they knew
they could defend this total. As previously, Nomad’s trusty twelfth man ‘extras’
had made a sizeable addition to the score, this time adding only slightly under
50% to the batsmen’s total.
A good quality tea, saw Nomads into the field. Heslington and Hoddy opened the
bowling and the ball was soon disappearing over the fence on one side and the
stream on the other as they had no answer to the powerful hitting of Sidebottom,
who reached 50 just after his opening partner had got off the mark. First change
bowlers, Collins and Hughes, managed to stem the flow of boundaries a little,
but the damage had been done. Although Collins managed to remove Boyd it was not
enough and a few boundaries later saw Sidebottom score the winning runs with yet
another boundary, leaving him with a personal total of 83 out of the 89 total.
Greaves had at least managed to make him think with his mixture of very slow and
extremely slow balls. Had he gone early (and one or two fell into spaces between
fielders), who knows what could have happened, as the other batsmen scored just
4 in the 14 overs it had taken Sidebottom to win the match!
So Nomads returned home somewhat subdued, hoping to score at least 87 at Longdon
next week!
