Woore v
Scores: Nomads 165 all out: Woore
137 all out
Strong team performance, as Nomads make it three out of four.
The annual friendly with Woore has
often been a one-sided affair, but this year the teams were more evenly matched
as Nomad’s acceleration in the second half of the innings ultimately made the
difference.
Gardner and Stanley opened up for
Nomads, the latter being particularly tentative until he had got off the mark,
after which he began to apply more force to his shots. Unfortunately, with the
score on 18 in the seventh over, Stanley drove one straight to a fielder, who
took a good catch low down. McCumisky, at three, looked as if knew what he was
doing but offered an opportunity before he had the chance to get going. Weir
soon followed, similarly ‘gonadding’. This bought in Bourne, already with two
‘goldens’ to his name. It looked as if was going to add to this as he got an
outside edge to his first ball but it fell just short of slip, bounced over the
outstretched hand and rolled away as Bourne ‘sprinted’ through for his first run
of the year, to loud applause from the boundary and handshakes from the umpire.
A good sweep for two added to Bourne’s tally but he succumbed to an unplayable
first ball from Ujid which cut back off the pitch to take the top of off stump
as Bourne, with feet firmly planted, dangled his bat at where a straighter ball
might have been. At 37 for 4 Nomads needed to apply some control. This came in
the form of the slim-line Brannigan who was prepared to dot out his first ten
balls and had only reached 3 after 20. However he and Gardner began to apply
themselves to the task as 55 came up after the first 20 overs. Thereafter
Brannigan began to get into his rhythm but unlike previous seasons kept the ball
reasonably low although both he and Gardner were let off by balls that took the
leading edge and were either spilled or fell between fielders. Brannigan finally
fell for a well-paced 25, caught by Ujid who looked as if was going to take the
ball on the bounce, before diving forward to grasp a good catch at ground level.
The arrival of Pickering prompted a change in the field who were clearly keen to
keep up the pressure. With almost the entire field around the bat Pickering’s
soft hands thwarted them and a deft flick for two followed by a swept four drove
them back, however a (possibly) harsh lbw from Stanley ended his foray.
Heslington had hardly reached the crease before a big shout for a second lbw was
ringing around the ground but this time Stanley thought differently. After which
Heslington, hitting firmly through the line, continued Nomads’ chase for vital
runs. Heslington perished just after Gardner had finally succumbed for an
excellent 64, continuing his rich vein of form. Hoddy hardly bothered the
scorers, other than to enter a couple of dots, bringing Forster to join Hughes
for the last eight balls. Faced with the previously frugal Quinton, Forster
managed to strike the only 6 of the match to the short boundary as the final
pair added 16 before Hughes heaved at, but missed, the final ball of the
innings.
After tea Nomads took to the field and
with only five ‘recognised’ bowlers need them all to step up. McCumisky kept
wicket taking some excellent leg side balls and standing up to Brannigan,
leaving Gardner to prowl in the covers. Brannigan enticed Parkes to loop one to
Hoddy 15 metres or so from the wicket, but inexplicably it went through the
captain’s hands, as he had perhaps too long to take the straightforward
opportunity. Neither of the openers looked particularly comfortable at times,
but accumulated runs slowly employing the cut to good effect. Forster finally
got a straight one through Parkes, as Beard joined Zar, but it wasn’t until just
before the drinks break that a second Woore wicket was taken, with Hoddy finally
trapping Zar in front of the wicket. At this stage Woore were slightly ahead,
having scored four more runs than Nomads and lost two less wickets. However
Hughes was bowling well and although Hoddy was going for a few too many he began
to pick up wickets. Unlike Nomads, the Woore batsmen failed to accelerate soon
enough and although Irvine’s departure gave some urgency as first MacIntyre,
then Mellard along with Beard hit out lustily, driving Nomad’s fielders to the
long off and long on boundaries the first two of these batsmen perished trying
to raise the pace. Hughes returned for his last two overs, at the pavilion end
and caused some concerns amongst Nomads as he bowled consecutive wide, wide, no
ball but he intelligently switched to round the wicket. All this time Heslington
had been bowling steadily with no reward until as the overs began to run out he
pinned Mellard and then took a catch from his own bowling to remove Charlton. It
was left to Brannigan to clean up with renewed pace as he finally removed Beard
to a good return catch, for a well fought half century and bowled Quinton.
Despite a slow start (coupled with a
bout of ‘Delhi belly’ for Bourne which kept him off the pitch for more than 3
overs), Nomads had come through to their third win from four and march (?) on to
their first home match, next week.
