Drinks prove Nomads undoing
Captain for the day Collins snr. won the toss and elected to bat. Unfortunately
Collins jr., electing to take strike, pushed lazily at the first ball which
moved in from off and struck leg stump. After McCumisky’s duck last week Nomads
were hoping for something better and he stepped up to the mark in a good
partnership with Gardner, striking some powerful blows to and over the boundary.
Gardner too was going well scoring with some deft glances and more powerful
blows. However, with the score on 70, McCumisky was caught behind, but umpire
Forster had spotted three behind square on the leg side and called the no-ball.
Unfortunately the batsman was unable to make the best of his reprieve as next
ball, umpire Pickering adjudged him to be lbw, bringing Jones to the crease.
After a few tentative prods Jones struck a couple of good blows as the third
wicket stand began to develop. With the score on 90, Gardner was caught in two
minds, before deciding to push yet another through the slip area, but
unfortunately got a bottom edge onto his stumps. Moss, in his first match of the
season, not surprisingly looked a little rusty but had just begun to get going
when he was again given out lbw, despite having got an inside edge on the ball.
A third lbw saw the end of Jones but Bourne struck a couple of fours, one from a
thick edge which went through the legs of third man, along with a decent pull,
however he didn’t last as long as might have been hoped. Pickering was recently
in, when he was joined by Forster, with the score on 132 and what had looked
like a decent score was beginning to look less likely as batsmen got themselves
in but then got out too easily. However, Pickering and Forster struck up a good
partnership, pushing the score along to 185, [Pickering’s hook to the boundary,
off his eyebrows being the shot of the innings] before Pickering looped one to
mid-on as the overs began to run out. Collins had just enough time to get to the
wicket and flick one for four before he was bowled round his legs leaving
Blackburn to crack the final ball for another boundary. At 197 for 8, Nomads had
fallen perhaps a little short of what they might have hoped for, after a good
start but this was still their best score of the season so far and looked
eminently defendable.
A super tea saw Nomads into the field
with an already sodden ball. Moss bowled with early fire and troubled the
batsmen, while Forster struggled with his line. However after the first ten
overs the score had only reached 38. In this period McCumisky had missed a
difficult low catch off Forster while Moss had considerable ill-luck as he beat
both batsmen frequently. Jones replaced Forster at the pavilion end, bowling a
good first over. The start of his second over was less promising as the first
two balls went for six, then four, however a straighter ball bowled Yasir just
one short of a deserved half century. Jones’ next four overs went for only 18
although McCumisky was a little too quick to celebrate a catch behind as the
ball slipped from his grasp in the act of him throwing it up, as pressure was
kept on the batsmen, so that at the drinks interval the score had reached 93 for
4 as Collins, replacing Moss, had trapped Srichand in front in his first over,
then had Madhavan caught at long-off by Forster followed quickly by Wasim, well
caught by Jones, in his second over. Nomads might have hoped to have broken the
back of the Strykers batting. Unfortunately this was not to be as in the next
six overs a further 76 runs came, mainly from the powerful hitting of Yuvaraj
who hit twelve fours and a six in his 73 not out. Jones, in particular came in
for some heavy punishment in his final over, going for 26, including four wides
as he lost his control. By now the end appeared to be in sight and although
Greaves removed Karthick to a smart bit of stumping another couple of heavy
blows saw Strykers home.
An ultimately disappointing result for
Nomads, with Strykers accelerating after the drinks interval. A below strength
bowling attack, coupled with a slippery ball made life difficult and Yuvaraj’s
acceleration proved too much to contain.
