by 12 runs
Nomads fall short
at Shugborough.
After winning the
toss, Shugborough CC were put into bat on a damp wicket. The opening spell of
bowling saw Heslington bowl Turnock with one that kept low and Blackburn
difficult to get away. A bowling change saw Richardson start to accelerate but
Hughes’ use of the conditions saw his first six overs go for only seven runs. A
change of ends saw Collins clean bowl Barlow and get Longworth LBW without
troubling the scorers. At the other end, Bourne was bowling tightly and only his
last two overs were costly but he was rewarded with the wicket of Bilton who was
stumped by McCumisky. As Richardson kept plundering runs and giving little by
way of chances, the other batsmen continued to perish. Pickering, in a good
spell of right arm round the wicket bowling had Taylor caught and bowled and his
1 for 18, at the business end of the innings, was a credit to him. Hughes
returned for his final two overs and had Richardson dismissed LBW for 88 to
complete an excellent spell. A finger injury to Stanley forced a change in the batting line up with Jones stepping up to open the innings with Gardner and they made steady progress. A calf injury forced one of the Shugborough players to leave the field. Jones was bowled with the score on 24 and two more wickets quickly followed, one to Barlow and the other to Turnock. Pickering joined Gardner and played a cautious knock while Gardner forced the issue at the other end. Pickering was eventually bowled by a full toss by Bilton with the score on 62. Heslington entered the fray and when out caught, chasing a wide delivery, the score had moved on to 97. From this point on, the asking rate was never more than five an over. Gardner, who batted with the target in mind, was eventually bowled by Richardson for an attacking 56. The successive run outs of Hughes then Collins and Blackburn’s first ball dismissal, out caught, to a ball that bounced awkwardly put a lot of pressure on the final pairing of Bourne and Stanley. With the score on a 132 and with five overs left, they did make a fist of it but finally succumbed to an LBW, 13 runs short with ten balls remaining.
