Nomads back to winning ways.
Captain Hoddy won the toss, decided to field and ended up batting in this annual
fixture that is always played in good spirit. Openers Heslington and Stanley
started with caution against the bowling of Robinson and Ings as the pitch
offered irregular bounce to the varied pace on offer. Stanley was out, trying to
move the score along, to a good catch by Blackburn P off Robinson’s bowling, who
also had Moss bowled and Brannigan, who looked set for a big score, caught by
Ball. His good spell 3-43 was only blighted by the last of his 14 overs going
for 13 runs. Hughes joined Heslington and a partnership of 67 in 11 overs with
plenty of boundaries upped the tempo. Blackburn P claimed the wicket of Hughes
to a catch by Ball, but the arrival of George saw the momentum maintained. As
the score increased, Heslington finally succumbed, LBW, trying to play across a
straight ball that did not bounce, for an 81 of few mistakes. With George
batting positively for his 27 not out, Westwood joined the fray and his cameo
ensured that the Nomads could declare at Tea with a defendable total.
To defend such totals, the Captain needs to use his bowlers to good effect,
today he certainly did. The opening bowlers started well with Moss clean bowling
Ings and Hoddy conceding only 1 run from his 5 overs. The skipper was quick to
the first change and bought Greaves on to take advantage of the pitch and reward
was immediate with St Giles being stumped by Blackburn G. Westwood at the other
end then had McCumisky caught by a fine low catch by George, the score was 29-3.
Skermer and Ball put on a partnership of 53 before the second change bowling
took effect with George claiming both wickets in successive overs. When the
third wave of batting power arrived so did Hoddy’s third change of bowling, this
time Hughes stepped in and had the dangerous Robinson LBW to a ball he appeared
to almost turn his back on. Hughes then had Hill caught by Moss and another LBW,
this time Edward. The fourth bowling change arrived and again the wickets fell.
Blackburn G had Smith caught by Westwood and Brannigan completed the task by
bowling Blackburn P.
