Abbots Bromley v Lichfield Nomads
10-Man Nomads Pray on Abbotts
Nomads looked to have a strong line-up for the match against Abbots Bromley.
This was weakened when a late withdrawal for illness by Nick George was reported
the evening before the match. However, a still confident Nomads side were put
into bat and a steady start was made by Gardner and Stanley (and Extras who lead
the scoring for some 10 overs). The loss of Stanley after 12 overs saw our most
nomadic of Nomads, Moss, come in determined to do well after the duck in his
previous match. With a resurgent Gardner, the partnership scurried along at 7
per over mainly off some decent slow bowling by Roberts and Bexon. Gardner was
finally excellently caught by Hendy. The ball seemed to be sailing over his head
but he made good ground to take the catch. Rolfe only briefly troubled the
scorers with a 3 ball duck, given out lbw by Stanley who felt the ball was just
hitting the top of the stumps. However the entrance of McCumsky produced an
assault on the bowling, particularly on Woods, with 76 coming off 9 overs,
including 4 sixes. Moss finally fell trying to push for his century but any hope
by Abbotts Bromley of the run-rate slowing was dispelled by the entrance of
‘Fearsome’ Fearon who helped himself to 22 off 14 balls. Somewhat shell-shocked,
Woods started to bowl a ninth over but the scorer called attention to the fact
much to the disapproval of the watching Nomads team who fancied a few more overs
from Woods. A total of 253 seemed likely to be a winning score.
Nomads took to the field after a splendid tea, opening with Heslington and Hoddy
who kept the match under control with 36 runs for 2 wickets off 12 overs. Hoddy
took himself off and brought on Jones, who had missed out in the Nomads’
“run-feste”. However a recent loss of confidence in his bowling resulted in a
succession of wides and no-balls, due to not being able to time the release of
the ball. After a 17 ball, 17 run over , Hoddy decided to bring on Gardner who
had performed admirably the previous week. With his wicket keeping duties being
usurped by Blackburn and McCumsky, Gardner is taking on the role of batting
all-rounder rather than batting keeper. Both he and Fearon bowled well not
allowing the Abbotts Bromley batsmen to accelerate in the manner that Nomads had
achieved. Up to 20 overs the 2 teams had similar scores , ie Abbotts Bromley 79
and Nomads 84, however Abbotts Bromley had lost more wickets and Nomads were
confident of victory. Hughes and Moss finished off the innings. Hughes was
cruelly robbed of the chance of 5 wickets by Barker who ran out his partner
Hendy in a suicide run, but claimed 4 with the last ball of the match after very
strong lbw appeals were turned down on the previous 2 balls.
A strong Nomads side achieved victory and bowled out the opposition. No doubt
Abbots Bromley will be trying to get their revenge next season.
