Walsall Health v Lichfield Nomads Scores: Walsall Health 64 a.o. v Lichfield Nomads 65 for 1
Nomads arrived at Alldridge in good time
for an anticipated tough match against Walsall AHA. Walsall had looked likely to
be players short and the late availability of Westwood may have given him the
opportunity to try out against his team mates. However Walsall had managed to
raise a full, but weakened, side. Hoddy won the toss and elected to bowl with
Brannigan and Heslington. Walsall started well, with Brannigan struggling a bit
for line and length, this being his first match since May. He elected to come
round the wicket which brought success with a ball that flicked the pads and the
leg stump barely dislodging the bail. The run-rate slowed but the batsmen looked
comfortable until Brannigan produced
a great piece of fielding, throwing down the stumps at the bowler’s end from a
good 40 yards. The old adage says 1 brings 2. In this case it was 1 brings 4 as
4 more wickets fell in the next couple of overs. 43 for 1 in 13 overs became 50
for 6 in 16 overs. After this the contest was over as Hughes and Bourne polished
off the tail, leaving Nomads to score 65 to win.
The trusted partnership of Gardner and
Heslington were sent in to do the job which they almost did unaided. An lbw
against Heslington when he felt he had edged the ball saw Jones come in to face
1 ball before the job was done.
A
fine victory against a side we often struggle against. We fielded well taking 4
and only dropping 1 and a great run-out changed the flow of the match.
After tea the opportunity was taken to
play a 16-16 Over match. Westwood, Bourne and Pickering played for the
opposition who had lost men. Quick
knocks by Moss, Jones, who played some elegant cover drives, and Brannigan who smashed 26 off 11
balls saw a decent total of 109. Nomads opened with Moss and Blackburn G who had
little success but then Hughes and Hoddy slowed things down with Hughes claiming
2 and Hoddy 3 , Hoddy having a chance of a hat-trick after Bourne had graciously
allowed a “golden Gonad”. Hoddy also caught a spectacular one handed catch at
mid on. Hall pushed the score along and after he retired Pickering saw out the
victory in the last over with an unbeaten 14.
