Nomads Wilt
in the Sun
Captain Hoddy, who was looking forward to a day drinking cool beer watching the
tennis, was called in to take the place of the injured McCumsky. After the
opposition were found loitering on the top pitch , he started well by winning
the toss and electing to bat on the hottest day of the year. Some debate was
caused by Umpire Forster calling firstly no-ball then dead ball to the opening
ball. The spectators debated what arcane law of cricket had been breached to
cause this. Later it was discovered that the umpire had not been ready to
proceed. Opening with Heslington and Stanley, the pitch soon showed some
variable bounce and with some unpredictable bowling it was hard to get a rhythm.
Heslington was surprised by a good ball and was dismissed for 9 to bring in Moss
who started well but was troubled by Youaraj. Moss found an unusual way to get
out (another entry into the Dan Moss Compendium of Odd Dismissals?) by being
bowled off his tummy – a disadvantage of being one of the leaner Nomads perhaps.
Stanley was playing anchor man whilst others around him flourished briefly then
went. Forster again caused controversy when questioning an lbw decision against
him. The ball had quite clearly struck the bat first but the opposition had
early on got into the habit of appealing every time the ball hit the pads and
were taken by surprise when the decision was up held , however they withdrew
their appeal and order was restored. Blackburn P. rolled back the years with a
brief cameo of 4 fours and Hoddy contributed to take the score from 134 to a
respectable 162.
The
score though small gave some hopes, but with the hard-hitting Asian batsmen to
quell, it seemed likely that Nomads would have to take all the wickets of 10-man
Strykers.
Heslington and Hoddy opened the bowling and with the batsmen seeming to want to
hit every ball for 6, wickets soon fell and Strykers were reduced to 25 for 4.
Hopes blossomed of another Nomad win but Wasim and Nitin started to play
sensibly and dug in. More wickets could easily have fallen with some balls just
missing the stumps and catches not going to fielders but the 2 batsmen rode
their luck and progressed to 133-5 when Heslington bowled Wasim in his 2nd
spell. Ramki came in to back up Wasim and seemed determined to run him out by
calling for second runs no matter
where the ball had gone, perhaps because with the heat and frustration of not
taking wickets, the fielding had begun to get a bit ragged. None of Forster,
George or Moss was able to make inroads and Strykers saw out the match with a
couple of overs to spare thanks mainly to the efforts of Wasim on an unbeaten
68.
A
fairly close match which could have gone to Nomads with another wicket or two.
None of our batsmen was able to go on to the big
score which was needed for victory.
