Sutton on the Hill v Lichfield Nomads
Sutton on
the Hill - 239 - 5
NOMADS GRIND
OUT A DRAW ON THE HILL
The
usual Saturday shortage of players saw Nomads with 2 guests albeit of a good
quality. A lost toss saw Nomads take to the field on a very hot day. Heslington
and Fearon opened the bowling with the new ball. A tight start saw the first
wicket to Fearon with the score at 21 off 8 overs. Unfortunately this brought in
Martindale who proceeded in his usual style, hitting even good balls for 6 and
causing havoc at the outdoor birthday party at the house just over one of the
mid-on boundaries. A double bowling change saw the guests come on to bowl with
no more success at keeping Martindale quiet than the rest of us. Harding was
also hitting some lusty blows at the other end until he top-edged Hoddy to
gully. Forster eventually trapped Martindale falling to a good catch by Coombes
on the mid-off boundary. The innings was eventually declared with 20 minutes to
tea on 239 off 29 overs. Nomads declined an offer to bat for 10 minutes and an
early tea was taken.
As
usual in the Sutton match any chance of a win is dependant on an early dismissal
of Martindale . So we went into bat with only a small chance of achieving a win.
This was further reduced by the dismissal of Gardner off the first ball. Gardner
tried to give a rank bad ball what it deserved and unfortunately top-edged the
ball to a short fine leg. This knocked the stuffing out of Nomads and the
batsmen fairly quickly went into draw mode; overs 5 to 12 were all maidens.
Stanley was given lbw and Bourne came in to repeat his earlier innings at Sutton
when he saved the match. However a rush of blood saw a wild swing to have him
bowled. Taylor hit one good 4 then tried to repeat the shot and was also bowled.
Jones and Fearon were now in and both curbed their usual attacking instincts to
dot out the overs. Fearon was perhaps being a bit too cautious when he dollied
up an easy catch; as did Pickering. However Heslington and Jones pegged away to
see us reach the close of play to give the draw.
Possibly we went into our shell a bit early in this match against some erratic
bowling which saw extras (67) outscore the total of the batsmen’s scores (51).
Batsmen might have enjoyed playing their natural game more even with a greater
risk of losing the game. Something to think about if we play more declaration
games.
