Lichfield Nomads v Shugborough
Rampant
Nomads Shrug off Shugborough
Thankfully the weather was cooler than of late and morning drizzle even
threatened to disrupt the match. However after losing the toss Nomads took to
the field with 10 men due to the delayed arrival of I Bourne. The new ball was
taken by Brannigan and Moss. The former was bowling a really tight spell until a
strained side removed him from the attack; the latter reverted to a short run
after early trouble with his run –up saw 11 off his first over. However only a
further 16 came from his spell. George had replaced Brannigan and kept the
scoring in bounds even after losing his ‘action’ in his 7th over.
However no wickets again keeps Hughes ahead of George in the wicket stakes.
Bourne replaced Moss and bowled well. At this stage with the loss of only one
wicket and 2 batsmen set, I expected an effort to push up the run rate but the
batsmen seemed content with 4 an over. Blackburn replaced Bourne bowling in his
new left- arm spin mode. This is still a work in progress but could be a useful
addition to the bowling attack when perfected. Hoddy had replaced George to see
out the overs and a tight spell saw 2 wickets fall for only 20 runs, propelling
Hoddy, I believe, to leading wicket taker. Westwood was allowed by the
opposition to bowl some overs as 12th man to see out the innings.
A
target of fewer than 200 was a good reward for the usual Nomads dogged attitude
and persistence especially after the loss of key player Brannigan. With the
Nomads batting line-up, I felt 189 at just under 5 per over was gettable.
Gardner and George opened the batting in order to get off to a quick start. The
opening bat Turnock (95no) also opened the bowling and produced a good spell but
runs came from the other end giving a 5 per over runrate. George was bowled by a
straight ball producing the usual George invective as he came off the field.
However Gardner was continuing his run of good form and Moss after a slow start
began to score runs. Goodwin looked innocuous but, bowling a la Greaves, kept
the runs in check. Gardner was eventually caught, after being dropped a couple
of times, just after completing his 5th 50 of the season. McCumisky
came in and kept the score moving along and then Moss was out bringing in Scott.
Some panic occurred when Scott firstly ran out McCumisky who hesitated going for
a sharp single and then Pickering who never wanted the run. Scott more than made
amends by smashing a series of fours, aided by P Blackburn to reach the target
with 2 overs to spare. Another enjoyable victory for Nomads thanks again to a determined attitude.
