Lichfield Nomads v Walsall Health
Nomads Let
Chances Slip
After
a night of heavy rain resulting in a soft greenish pitch, Hoddy decided to put
Walsall in to bat. Fearon and Moss opened and both had good , tight spells. Moss
has bowled well this season with little reward and his economy rate of 3.5 , the
3rd most economical of Nomads, is a better reflection of his bowling
than a strike rate, prior to this match,
of 204. Hughes and George replaced the openers and Hughes did well to dismiss
Ince, obviously a class act, with a generous lbw decision from the umpire when a
much closer lbw shout with Moss bowling had previously been turned down. He also took a good
catch off his own bowling to dismiss Fell. George is really struggling with his
bowling and a session in the nets is required to bring back his early season
form. Hoddy replaced George and Greaves had a couple of overs on replacing
Hughes. Preece used his feet well against Greaves and Westwood was introduced to
see out the innings. Stand-in keeper Rolfe had an excellent match behind the
stumps letting very little past him and taking a good leg side catch and 2
stumpings.
With
a very similar total to reach as last week, Nomads were fairly optimistic. With
what seemed like a good batting lineup.
Stanley and George opened the batting.
George was dismissed for 4 caught by the keeper off a thin edge and then
Moss was dismissed off a very good ball by Davis which swing away and then cut
back off the pitch to beat the forward defensive stroke. Stanley was then
dismissed for 2. Things were looking gloomy but then Fearon came in and soon
began to take the bowling apart reaching 50 off 29 balls including 2 sixes.
Hughes had been and gone, needing 1 run for his 1000 runs for Nomads, a mistimed
lofted drive saw him caught for 0. Westwood had come in and playing very
sensibly was just staying there whilst Fearon accumulated the runs. At 110-4 off
21 overs, Nomads looked poised to take another victory. Unfortunately the
introduction of Preece was our downfall. Bowling in a style similar to a certain
K Greaves, firstly Fearon’s eyes lit up but an attempted 4 shot to the leg side
boundary saw him caught for 59. Westwood took on the mantle of run scorer and
was proceeding nicely when at 129 off 24 overs , he tried for too much and was
bowled by Preece. Three good slip catches by Smith saw the dismissals of Bourne,
Rolfe and Blackburn, P and the innings was ended when Greaves was caught
attempting a lofted drive.
This
was a game Nomads could easily have won. However only Fearon and Westwood really
got going and they both succumbed a few overs too soon. An extra 5 overs batting
by either could have seen Nomads over the line. However a good match played in a
good spirit
