Wednesbury CC v Lichfield Nomads CC

Scores: Nomads 179 for 5; Wednesbury 180 for 6

With unavailability due to football and late withdrawals Nomads had to call in a couple of guests and phone for a late substitute.

Heslington won the toss and elected to bat first with the new opening combination of Stanley and Jones – with a couple of players still to arrive the hope was that they would stick in for a while, and so they did. Runs however came slowly against some accurate bowling and it wasn’t until the seventh over that the score overtook the over count with the help of a few extras. Jones eventually played a little late to a ball which struck the base of the stumps, with the score on 11, in the 9th over. This brought Heslington to the wicket and it was clear from the outset that he was in good form as he struck boundaries with ease. Stanley then departed after a 40-ball innings, with the score on 48 but now up to 3 per over. Stevens clearly knew which end of his bat was which and cracked a superb off drive against the ankle of one fielder, cracked another one over the pavilion roof and almost decapitated Heslington who got his hand up just in time to save his head. However next ball he advanced down the wicket, played for the non-existent spin and was easily stumped a couple of feet out of his ground. Moss joined Heslington and both batsmen advanced the score quickly with some well-placed strokes. Heslington hitting powerfully over the top, while Moss played some good drives and pulls. Just when it looked like these two might take Nomads up to 200 Heslington was well caught in the covers. Pinfield in his first appearance of the season nurdled away for a few, trying to give Moss the strike, but fell quickly, leaving Hughes to accompany Moss to the tea interval.

Heslington opened with a good spell at the pavilion end, removing Missien(?) but Forster has been having difficulties with his line of late and continued to do so, giving away rather too many big wides. He was soon replaced by Hughes who bowled some good balls but also struggled at times with his line against batsmen who were now set and playing with ease. Stevens replaced Heslington and worked up a good pace but with no luck at all as the score advanced too quickly for Nomads’ liking. Moss, bowled a mixture of spin and quicker stuff at first before settling on the latter and was unlucky not to get a wicket as Heslington put down a steepling chance on the square leg boundary. Just when all looked lost, at 160 for 1, things started to happen. Moss bowled Singh and almost immediately Forster took a catch to remove the other off the bowling of the returning Heslington. Another wicket each for Moss and Heslington, followed by a good catch low down by Heslington off the bowling of Bourne and Nomads began to have belief. However Wednesbury had kept an ace up their sleeves as the w’keeper (unfortunately un-named in the scorebook) struck the final 10 runs in two balls to make sure that Nomads did not come back from the dead!

A good fight from Nomads who never gave up hope in the field, where particular mention must be given to Jackson who made some vital stops at mid-off and Jones deployed variously between midwicket and cow-corner.
