Nomads revenge

After a heavy defeat last year Nomads were hoping for a stronger performance this time around. Gardner was obviously keen as he broke all records by arriving first!!

Hoddy decided to bat and opened with Gardner and Stanley. The latter was going along steadily at ‘more than a run an over’ including some good drives when he was bowled with the score on 50 in the eleventh over. By now Swynnerton had established a pattern of wides and byes they were to maintain throughout the match, with the captain keen to get as many players as possible involved. It wasn’t long before Gardner was stumped taking on Chandler who was getting considerable turn. However, Moss was in a forceful mood and soon got into his stride, with first Scott and then Rolfe. Then just as he was beginning to cut loose Moss drove one uppishly into the covers and was well taken by the captain. Rolfe too was striking some good blows when the bowlers could put it within his reach and was unfortunate to be stumped as the slowness of the ‘keeper meant that the batsman not only had time to get his foot back but also enough to raise it again before the wicket was broken. Jones and George finished off proceedings with a good stand, taking the score to 190, of which extras had contributed 57.

A shower during tea delayed matters by no more than 10 minutes as Hoddy elected Moss and Forster to open the bowling – showing faith in the latter that the bowler did not feel, after recent difficulties with his line. Indeed Forster’s first seven balls went away for 16 runs before things suddenly began to go right as he slowed down the flight and added loop to deliveries, putting doubt in the batsmen’s minds. At the other end Moss was bowling with real fire and in the third over cleaned up Bennett, last season’s century maker, for just four. However after nine overs the rain got heavier and the players came off as the covers were swiftly wheeled out. A half-hour wait left Nomads wondering if play would continue but eventually the skies lightened and after some discussion as to whether this was ‘light drizzle’ or indeed ‘mizzle’, play got under way again. Although footholds were a little difficult Moss removed Jones to a catch by Scott and Forster bemused Chandler caught in at least three minds before completely missing a straight ball. Davidson was striking the ball with real power, creating difficulties for Nomads’ ball driers, however he carelessly chased a widish delivery from Forster and was well caught by Rolfe from a loud snick. Hughes and Hoddy replaced the openers and it wasn’t long before Hughes was up to his usual tricks of dropping a catch, this time on his follow through; Hughes is well known for his hard hands but was less prepared for the ball going between them and hitting a somewhat softer part of his anatomy, accompanied by much mirth around the field. However, after a few minutes (when not one of his alleged team mates offered a massage) he got back gingerly to his feet and carried on. His fortitude was soon to be rewarded as he took a looping caught & bowled, followed up next ball by bowling Bailey. A good ‘hat trick ball’ was kept out but by now Nomads were on the rampage with Hoddy taking wickets at one end and Hughes continuing his good form including a fine catch by Hoddy ‘running’ back. A final catch by Rolfe saw Nomads home with a dozen overs to spare as the light began to fade.

An excellent all-round performance by the whole team, with strong batting and fielders backing up the bowlers.

Apologies to anyone not credited for achievements – scorebook in a right mess!!
