Nomads Just Lose in Close Finish

The forecast again looking poor, Nomads travelled the short distance to Longdon. The opposition put us in and Stanley and Gardner opened looking comfortable as the score steadily mounted. Stanley even hit a 6, over a short boundary, much to his surprise. Gardner having achieved yet another 50 began to look to accelerate and edged one to the keeper. Weir came in and 2 run-outs in one over saw the departure of Stanley for a good 28 and Scott for a gonad. However with plenty of batting to come Nomads still looked in good shape. Much was expected of Brannigan, but whether the bowling was tighter or the pitch had worsened due to the light drizzle it had experienced throughout the match, the batsmen found it difficult to score. Wickets continued to fall with little contribution to the score and the innings subsided to 145-9.
A disappointing end to the innings after a good start saw Nomads fall short by at least 40 from what was anticipated. However conditions were not easy for batting with a soggy pitch and slow outfield.

Brannigan and Hughes opened the bowling. Both bowling really tightly until Brannigan began to slip in his run-up in his 5th over giving away 11 runs. Heslington replaced Brannigan but had trouble overpitching and went for 5 per over. Greaves replaced Hughes who had had an excellent spell taking a wicket and conceding only 9 runs. With the opposition at 78-4 off 24 overs, Nomads looked in with a chance of claiming victory but Longdon managed to keep going at the 4 per over required. With only one over to go and 2 to get, Pickering came on to bowl ( as the captain had not worked out how to rotate his 5 main bowlers – Heslington should bowled 4 from each end). The batsman looped up the first ball into the air for an easy to Hughes who unfortunately  spilled it and enabled the batsmen to run a single. The 3rd ball looped up off a top edge over the keeper and thus the match was lost.

This was a match we could have won, a good start should have been extended to give us at least 170 which would have been sufficient. However a good close finish is exactly the type of match we want and everyone enjoyed it
