Lichfield Nomads v Old Moseley Tavern

Nomads took on unknown opponents Old Moseley Tavern (aka Old Moseley Fit Men) on a warm sunny day that was made for cricket. Nomads were a little weak in the bowling department; one comment was that there were more wicket keepers than bowlers in the team and so we were looking for a big score when we won the toss and elected to bat. Gardner began quickly profiting from some high full tosses but this seemed to go to his head and he was out mistiming a  lofted drive. Stanley acted as anchor man to brief appearances by Scott, Rolfe and Pinfield- the latter out to a lbw to a ball he felt he had nicked with his bat. Stanley’s batting has come on apace with a decent run-rate now added to his limpet like attachment to his wicket. With his departure Coles and Heslington flourished briefly but Pickering , 2 Blackburns and Hoddy barely troubled the scorers. A score of 164 looked reasonable - noting that there had been a mammoth 64 extras with the batmen contributing only 100 runs - but  all depended upon the ability of the opposition batsmen. Their bowling had been erratic at times but overall of a good standard.

The opening pair, although reasonable posed no great threat, and Coles after he started pitching on a fuller length and Hoddy each took a wicket. However this brought in Harris who after scratching round initially began to attack the bowling. There are some teams we play whose main threat is one batsman, ie Sutton on the Hill and Bugbrooke, and if we can get the danger man out early we have a chance. Unfortunately this did not occur and Harris made an unbeaten 99 in 16 overs to win the match scoring just one fewer run than the entire Nomads team.

It may be sour grapes on my part but I never enjoy such matches where one man dominates so much.
