Scores:
Sutton on the Hill CC 216 for 7, Lichfield Nomads CC 149 all out.
Nomads fall
short in Sutton scorcher.
On the
hottest day of the year so far skipper Westwood won the toss and with the draw
an option, inserted the opposition.
With the
newly gained experience of league cricket it was a strong looking Sutton side
that took to the field but the Nomads fielded a decent side too with Moss a late
substitute and Fearon playing his first match of the season.
Booth and
Duffill opened for Sutton and batted solidly to some good bowling from
Heslington and Moss. Both were unlucky not to get a wicket in their opening
spells. Westwood took over from the pavilion end and trapped Duffill lbw. Fearon
bowled Harding’s off stump and Moss took an outstanding catch in the covers
after steaming in from the boundary and diving to pouch the ball low down.
Fearon trapped Land lbw and the Nomads were inching their way back into the
game.
Martindale
was his usual self, trying to dominate the bowling and had quickly reached 32
when he was bowled by Heslington. Trevatt and Mick Wenn added some useful runs
at the end before they were called in for an early tea at 4:20. What a fine tea
it was too. Fresh melon and scones with jam, cream and half a strawberry were
the highlights.
Gardner hit a
four from Fred’s first ball; which was a full toss. The delivery which dismissed
him last season. Gardner was finding his touch but Scott was happy to keep out
the opposition and hang around while Gardner built his innings. There was then a
mix up and Scott was run out with the score on 42. Weir hung around with Gards
but clipped a firm shot straight to the fielder and was caught. Moss started
brightly with three fours in his first over but also picked out a fielder on the
short square boundary, with the score on 93. When Gardner was out for a hard
earned 54 there were 12 overs left and the Nomads were 116 for 4. Victory was
not an option but the draw was attainable and the batsmen were desperate to end
the Nomads losing run. But confidence was low and took a battering as G.
Blackburn (2), Rolfe(13), Pickering (1) and Fearon(0) all fell to put the
pressure on the last 3. Westwood was looking solid and he batted well against
Ashford and Martindale. Heslington also looked solid but was caught in the slips
off the bowling of Ashford and the Nomads were down to the last pair with two
overs to go. Martindale was bowling pretty rapid at this point and his final
over was crucial. Westwood defended the first five balls without incident and
then set off to run a quick single off the last ball in an effort to get on
strike. Unfortunately the ball went straight to a fielder and Blackburn stood
his ground. Both batsmen were at the non-strikers end by now but Sutton fumbled
the throw, the ball was then gathered at the second attempt and the fielder ran
to the stumps and dislodged the bails to secure victory with an over to spare. Disclaimer: any offence caused by this article is unintentional, any praise is well deserved. |
