Trent Valley have the power

Nomads fell disappointingly short by 30 runs against Trent Valley, away at Rugeley Power Station.

Trent Valley batted first and were scoring at a decent rate and seemed on course for 140/150 when the Nomads got back into the game with crucial wickets. Fearon picked up 2 wickets and Hughes grabbed 3 wickets including a catch off his own bowling and the Trent Valley innings petered out. Westwood, Brannigan and Moss took a wicket apiece and Fearon ran round from fine leg to run out Hanlon with an accurate throw and smart take by Moss, to end the innings. Nomads were left to chase 99; which seemed gettable given the batting line up.

Moss opened but didn’t last long departing to another unlucky dismissal hitting the ball onto his boot and deflecting it onto the stumps. Fearon played too early and was bowled. Westwood survived one big lbw appeal before being given out next ball. After some discussion, the batsmen was called back by the opposition skipper as he had clearly edged it. He was then out caught off the next ball and Gardner was given out lbw in the same over, having believed he too had nicked the ball. The Nomads innings was in disarray and well behind the asking rate, credit to some good bowling by the Trent Valley side.
Jones fell to a wonder ball that turned sharply on the dry wicket. Brannigan was bowled. Scott hung around for a while, looking to survive but he too was bowled. Coles picked up a duck and the last wicket pair added 18 as TV brought on their part-time bowlers. Stanley was last man out bowled by the 77 year old Hanlon. Shades of Underhill from Church Stretton (for those that remember!)

A good recovery by the Nomads to restrict the opposition to 98 but frailties in the batting were exposed by a useful Trent Valley bowling performance. A suspicion that the long length of batting gave the Nomads the false impression that if they didn’t get the runs, somebody else would.
