The Whippets v The Fogies

Result: Whippets won by 17 runs

Experience no substitute for age

The Whippets came out on top in a friendly 20 over 5-a-side match at Bit End field, Whittington.

With Sunseekers unable to raise a team, it was decided to hold a Nomads v Nomads practice match. After much discussion on what the format would be it was agreed that the five youngest players (The Whippets) would take on the five oldest (The Fogies). Chairman Pinfield stood as umpire and scorer.

The whippets batted first and Moss played some powerful lofted drives. Moss was dropped by Fearon off Heslington and was then bowled by one that shot along the ground. George was hitting the ball sweetly too and eventually retired not out. Stanley and Rolfe bowled some decent overs considering their lack of match practice. Wickets continued to fall and the batsmen rotated round for another go up to the end of the 20 overs. The Whippets eventually scored 214,

The Fogies got off to a great start and Gardner and Stanley pushed the score along at the required rate. The game changed when Gardner retired not out. Fearon was run out by miles as Stanley called him for a quick single and he was dismissed without facing a ball, having stood at square leg for well over an hour. The Fogies consolidated and only scored 6 from three overs. When Stanley was dismissed, Heslington and Rolfe built a decent partnership but the rate was increasing all the time as Moss, George and Hughes bowled controlled spells and the Fogies hopes seemed dashed when Heslington was dismissed. Just as the match looked beyond the Fogies, Fearon clubbed two sixes and four fours from Weir’s penultimate over to keep the win mathematically possible. Fearon was then run out again as Rolfe called a risky single and George fielded well. The Fogies tried in vein to reach 200 and the score was 197 after 20 overs.

The whippets ran out worthy winners by 17 runs.
