Nomads seal
two wins in a row
The Nomads
followed up last weekend’s tour win with another victory, away at Entaco CC.
With a
football match still in progress due to an earlier injury and long wait for an
ambulance, the match started late and was reduced to 35 overs.
The wicket
was slow and bowler friendly, as was the outfield and it always looked like a
low scoring match was in prospect and so it proved.
The Nomads
won the toss and inserted the opposition. Moss and Fearon took the new ball and
bowled well and there were chances straight away. Fearon had two caught behinds.
One put down and one not given. Moss was getting good movement and the batsmen
played and missed a lot and he picked up two wickets clean bowled. Fearon made
it three down after a good catch by Hoddy. Hoddy and Forster took over and
Simons was trapped lbw by Forster. Hoddy bowled Blake and the opposition were in
disarray at 42 for 5 with not much batting to come. Forster got his second
victim when Sharp popped a simple catch to Fearon at short cover. Moss picked
the perfect time to introduce Pickering, playing with two black eyes and a taped
up nose after a freak netting accident. Having been hit full in the face by a
Cartwright beamer at Bit End on Tuesday.
Pickering’s
speed was troubling the batsmen and he was difficult to get away in the lush
outfield. Scott then took a regulation caught behind off Fearon. Moss rearranged
mid on and mid off and Read holed out to Forster who took a good catch.
The last pair
batted with some freedom and were proving difficult to shift but the match was
ended when Gardner, not for the first time today, leapt like a salmon to take a
diving one handed catch to dismiss Clarke and end the innings on 98.
In the end
Entaco got 20 odd runs more than they should have but given Fearon, Forster and
Pickering’s lack of bowling this season it was a good effort, backed up by some
excellent fielding in tricky conditions.
Weir and
Stanley started cautiously, perhaps too cautiously and the nervousness on the
square was transferring to the pavilion. After 10 overs the pair had mustered
just 14 runs. To be fair to the Entaco opening bowlers, they were bowling a
tight line and length and not giving much away.
They reached 19 off for 14 overs to see off the opening bowlers who
bowled right through. Luckily the change bowlers were not as frugal and Nomads
moved to 34 off 17 overs. Stanley was the first to fall bowled for 8 and Weir
soon followed caught out for 17. Bebb avoided the gonad but was bowled for 1, as
Nomads slipped to 42 for 3. Gardner and Moss took control of the situation and
batted sensibly hitting the bad balls when they came. Just as they looked likely
to win the match Gardner was out caught for 18 (91 for 4) and Fearon was caught
first ball by substitute fielder Bebb (91 for 5). Moss then hit a waist high
full-toss straight to the fielder and Nomads had slumped to 93 for 6. But with
the help of a few wides, Scott and Hoddy saw it through with Hoddy hitting the
winning run with 6.2 overs to spare.
The
opposition skipper generously treated the visitors to a drink in the bar
afterwards as a recompense for the inconvenience of the delay. A much needed
second win for the Nomads. Disclaimer: any offence caused by this article is unintentional, any praise is well deserved. |
